The concept was born from Leanhardt’s background as a physicist, combined with his time working in the New York Yankees’ analytics department. As the team analyzed player data, they realized that the sweet spot for each player varied significantly.

The solution? Tailoring the bat’s design to each individual hitter. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, the “torpedo” bat offers a personalized experience, placing the thickest part of the bat where the hitter is most likely to make solid contact.

Leanhardt, who has a remarkable academic background with a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan and a doctorate in physics from MIT, was the driving force behind the bat’s creation. His time at MIT included contributing to NASA-funded research aimed at cooling sodium gas to an extremely low temperature, a task that required precision and understanding of complex physical concepts.

This analytical mindset proved invaluable in his later role with the Yankees, where his ability to apply physics principles to baseball led to the development of the “torpedo” bat.

The bat’s design is focused on increasing the weight in the optimal area for power while reducing it at the tip. Leanhardt, during his time with the Yankees, worked closely with players to refine the concept.

He explained the bat’s function in simple terms, saying it’s about moving weight to the part of the bat where hitters do the most damage. The concept is straightforward: maximize the sweet spot for each batter while keeping the bat as effective and efficient as possible.

He humbly acknowledges that the technology is only as good as the player using it. “I’m used to being the one walking behind all this, and someone else is standing here. It’s definitely been surreal for the last couple days. At the end of the day, it’s about the batter, not the bat. It’s about the hitters and their hitting coaches, not the hitting implements.”
