Real Madrid has had its ups and downs this season both the La Liga and the Champions League. After failing to find a spot in the top eight (ranked 7th) in the Champions League, Madrid has surely turned the tides around in the second phase of the tournament. The Spanish side has also managed to be neck-to-neck with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in La Liga with a point difference between them as of March.

Carlo Ancelotti and his side were stumbling in the group stage losing three games. They finished the group stage campaign with 15 points losing two away games.

Two Away and a Home Losses for Real Madrid

Real Madrid’s first loss in the tournament came to Lille in the second match day of the group stage. The Los Blancos lost 1-0 to the French side despite having 60% of the ball possession.

Los Blancos’ biggest upset of the season could be AC Milan’s 3-1 triumph over them at the Santiago Bernabeu. Milan scoring two goals in the first half could only be replied with Vinicius Jr.’s penalty, as Tijjani Reijnders sealed the deal late into the game.

Liverpool quite comfortably marched past Real Madrid at Anfield as they won 2-0 in round five. This defeat played a huge role in Real Madrid’s failure to qualify through the top eight.

How has Real Madrid done this season so far?

With the new arrival Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid struggling to find the pace at the start of the season, there were hints that it would be that kind of year. However, with the Frenchman finding his pace and players like Rodrygo stepping up, the Los Blancos have recovered in a typical manner.

Currently being second on the table in La Liga behind Barcelona, they’ve been neck-to-neck with Hansi Flick’s side. Real Madrid has faced several injury problems at the back this season. With our preferred centre-backs Eder Militao and Antonio Rudiger out, the 15-time Champions League winners had their rough weeks defensively.

Despite the troubles, changes like Fede Valverde playing at right-back and Raul Asencio filling at the back have pulled them out of the deep. Ancelotti and his side are contenders for every competition they are active in.
