What Happened to Jack Draper? – Why Did Jack Draper Pull Out of the 2025 US Open?

British star Jack Draper pulls out of the 2025 US Open with a lingering arm injury.

Jack Draper’s US Open campaign ended abruptly before it could gather momentum. The Brit, who had battled through a tough opener against qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez, announced his withdrawal ahead of his second-round clash with Zizou Bergs. This was due to recurring left arm issues. Draper, the 2024 semifinalist, confirmed the decision on social media, apologizing to fans and stressing that protecting his health had to take priority.

“Hi guys, I’m sorry to say I’ll be withdrawing from the US Open,” Draper posted on X. “I tried my very best to be here and give myself the every chance to play but the discomfort in my arm has become to much and I have to do what is right and look after myself. Thank you for all the support.”

From Draper’s High Hopes to U.S. Open Heartbreak

The withdrawal hands Bergs a walkover into the third round, his best run at a major to date, where he awaits either 31st seed Gabriel Diallo or Jaume Munar. For Draper, however, the timing is especially cruel. The 22-year-old lefty had not played since Wimbledon, where bone stress and bruising in his left humerus forced him off the tour.

Though he arrived in New York determined to compete, Draper admitted that his body had sent warning signals. “I felt like my arm was shutting down a little bit when I was hitting forehands and on the serve as well,” he said before the tournament.

Currently ranked No. 5 in the world and seventh in the ATP Live Race To Turin, Draper has enjoyed one of his best seasons on the ATP Tour, highlighted by a title run at Indian Wells. Yet his struggles at the Grand Slams have mirrored his physical battles. He fell in the fourth round in both Melbourne and Roland Garros, while a second-round defeat to Marin Cilic at Wimbledon stunned home fans.

This latest setback underscores the physical toll of his rapid rise. Draper has carried a heavy workload for a player still early in his career, and while his shot-making has pushed him into the elite, his body has not always kept pace. Just a year ago, he was thrilling New York crowds with a semifinal run cut short only by eventual champion Jannik Sinner. Now, his 2025 campaign ends with an injury and a heartbreak for all Draper fans and his fellow Brits.

My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
