Daniil Medvedev’s China Open semifinal ended in dramatic fashion on Friday as the Russian retired against Learner Tien while trailing 5-7, 7-5, 4-0. Struggling with severe cramping, Medvedev accused the match officials of “trying to intimidate” him in an emotionally charged exchange before leaving the court. The retirement handed Tien a hard-fought victory and a place in his first ATP Tour final, where he will face world No. 2 Jannik Sinner.

Medvedev’s Cramping Struggles and Umpire Dispute

The match had been a rollercoaster, with Medvedev overcoming a late deficit in the second set to force a decider. The Russian led 3-0 and 5-3 in the second set before Tien clawed back to claim it 7-5. But cramps took their toll early in the third set. Medvedev struggled to move, receiving a code violation for “lack of effort” after failing to chase a routine serve. He visibly argued with the umpire, questioning the decision.

“You prefer that I retire?” Medvedev said to officials. “Say to the guys and the cameras that you prefer I retire. I’m giving my best effort so why the hell are you saying I’m not giving my best effort? Who are you to decide for me?” He added, “Why is every referee in the world trying to intimidate me? I didn’t say one word. After US Open, I’m trying to be good and this guy is doing that? I’m supposed to act good? Why are you trying to intimidate me? What’s your problem with me?”

Tien, reflecting on the match, said, “I was down 3-5 and 2-4 in the second and clawed my way back. I didn’t think anything was wrong with him and then he came out of the bathroom break kind of limping, so I was not sure if he was cramping or if he was injured, as he had tape on his leg. I think it was cramping and I have been there and it is not fun. All the best to him and it is not how you want to come through a match but I am happy to be in the final.”

Despite the pain, Medvedev continued until the score reached 4-0 in the third set before conceding. He shook hands with Tien and the umpire, saying, “Thanks a lot.” The Russian has not publicly detailed the severity of his cramp.

Tien, 19, becomes the second youngest player after Rafael Nadal to reach a China Open final. Meanwhile, Medvedev’s journey in Beijing, marked by a quarterfinal win over Alexander Zverev and a dramatic, cramp-ridden semifinal, ends with a mixture of resilience and controversy.
