WATCH: In the Middle of the Game, Steven Kwan Creates a Moment to Remember for Teammate

When Steven Kwan stepped into the batter’s box during Tuesday’s Guardians-Yankees game, he had something more important than hitting on his mind. Before even seeing a pitch, Kwan called time and pulled a pink wristband from his pocket, sliding it onto his left arm. A gender reveal for teammate David Fry and his wife Rebekah.

Miles away, teammate David Fry and his wife Rebekah got the message: Baby #2 is a girl.

“I was like, ‘Hell yeah, I think that’d be super cool,'” Kwan said about participating in the reveal. “Anything to involve David, because he’s obviously going through some rehab stuff, and we wish he was here.”

The Guardians went on to win the game 3-2. The idea came from a conversation between Rebekah Fry and Samantha Kwan, who are close friends. With the Frys expecting their second child. They already have a 2-year-old daughter named Evelyn. Samantha suggested her husband could help with a gender reveal during a game. David Fry is still going through rehab, after undergoing elbow surgery in November 2024.

“Just to be able to involve him [was important]. I know that every day the monotony of rehab is so brutal,” Kwan explained. “I know he watches every single game. So I thought it was a cool way to involve him.”

Kwan and Samantha kept the baby’s gender secret until game time, when home-plate umpire Vic Carapazza granted the unusual pre-pitch timeout request. Just a few days back, Bryce Harper, with the help of Trea Turner, did his own baby reveal by taking a blue bat to the plate.

The teammates caught up after the game, sharing a moment that briefly made baseball secondary to friendship and family.
