Washington Capitals Nearing Six-Year Contract Extension with Logan Thompson

The Washington Capitals are reportedly close to signing goalie Logan Thompson to a six-year contract extension, according to ESPN’s Kevin Weekes. The deal is worth $5.85 million per year, adding up to a total of $35.1 million, as per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. This is a huge step forward for the 27-year-old goaltender, who has emerged as one of the league’s top netminders and a potential Vezina Trophy candidate.

Thompson has been outstanding this season, posting a stellar .925 save percentage and 2.09 goals-against average in 27 games, along with an impressive 22-2-3 record. He has become a key player for the Capitals, even breaking the team’s initial plan to alternate him with Charlie Lindgren in net. Earlier this month, Thompson started seven straight games, allowing just eight goals on 179 shots.

Statistically, he’s been one of the best goalies in the NHL this season, ranking second in goals saved above expected, just behind Vezina favorite Connor Hellebuyck. The Capitals’ decision to acquire Thompson from the Vegas Golden Knights this past summer is looking like a brilliant move, especially after trading Darcy Kuemper to the Kings in the deal for Pierre-Luc Dubois.

This extension will give Thompson a significant raise. He’s currently in the final year of a three-year, $2.3 million contract he signed with Vegas in 2022. Over that time, he’s been one of the league’s most underpaid players, boasting a 68-29-11 record, a .915 save percentage, and five shutouts in 110 games between Vegas and Washington.

Although Thompson has only started more than 40 games in a season once, he’s already proven himself to be a reliable and talented goalie. He’s on track for another 40+ start season and has recorded three consecutive 20-win campaigns. Among goalies with more than 100 games played since the start of the 2022-23 season, Thompson’s .915 save percentage ranks third, ahead of elite goalies like Andrei Vasilevskiy and Igor Shesterkin.

This deal ensures Thompson will be the backbone of the Capitals as they aim to support Alex Ovechkin’s final years and make another push for the playoffs. The contract runs through the 2030-31 season, after which Thompson will become a free agent at age 34.

With this extension, the Capitals now have $69.375 million committed to 15 players for next season. Thompson’s $5.85 million cap hit will rank 15th among NHL goalies next year, while Washington will still need to address pending free agents like Lindgren and defenseman Jakob Chychrun.
