Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors finalized a two-year, $48.5 million contract, ending months of holding out and to a certain extent, the drama that came along with it, per ESPN’s Sham Charania. The deal includes a team option, allowing renegotiation next summer, keeping Kuminga’s future flexible.
The 22-year-old forward locks in his immediate role while preserving his career control. The Warriors, who were hesitant to trade Kuminga, structured an expiring contract that may fuel mid-season trade possibilities, balancing roster needs with salary cap in mind.

Last season, Coach Steve Kerr limited Kuminga’s playoff minutes, despite him 15.3 points, 2.2 assists, and 4.6 rebounds per game over 47 games. The former G-league ignite star, renowned for his explosive athleticism and rim-attacking, voiced his frustation over his reduced role. His desire for a bigger role on the team clashed with Kerr’s veteran-heavy lineups, which ignited the trade rumors and fueled the offseason contract sage.
Coach Kerr, while one of the best coaches of all time, is know for his controversial coaching decisions. And this is not the first time we’ve seen him restricting minutes to various players, as we saw in the 2024 Paris Olympics, where star Jayson Tatum similarly was benched for no reason despite him coming off a finals run and Tatum being one of the best players on the planet.
Kuminga faces hurdles breaking into Golden State’s playoff core this season. Kerr trusts and puts his faith on Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green, and Al Horford, and has neglected his secondary players such as Kuminga.
The Warriors’ motion offense suits Kuminga’s development as a dynamic scorer, but his star aspirations may stall looking at Coach Kerr’s history. He is excellent when driving inside, but still needs to refine his ball-handling and shooting skills to elevate his game.
The Warriors are expected to explore trade destinations for Jonathan Kuminga as soon as he becomes trade eligible on January 15th 👀

This short-term deal will keep him in the Bay Area, but the contract’s structure hints at a potential exit. Both Kuminga and the Warriors will reassess in 2026, with trade talks looming if his role doesn’t expand this season.

mma I cover the National Football League and things cannot get better than that. I always dreamed to play football or basketball professionally since I’m built like a Running Back. But now that I can’t, since I’m technically in the “Unc” age, I thought why not pick a career in sports industry? So here I am, doing what I love, and hoping that the Commanders win the Super Bowl. I give love to players when it’s due, but can be critical about their performances at the same time. Enough about me, now let my articles do all the talking.
