Walter Clayton Jr. was selected as the No. 18 pick in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards. However, he was soon traded to the Utah Jazz for No. 21st pick, the 43rd pick, and two future second-round picks. Clayton Jr. began his basketball career at Lake Wales High School. While at high school, he played both football and basketball.

He averaged 17.5 points, five rebounds, and 3.2 assists in his sophomore season, and transferred to Bartow High School following the completion of the season. As a member of the team, he averaged 15.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game.

For college, the Sebring, Florida-born joined Iona after getting offers from East Carolina, Florida A&M, Charleston, Stetson and James Madison. At Iona, he was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Player of the Year as a sophomore. Later, in 2023-24, he transferred to Florida and earned Second-Team All-SEC honors after leading his team to the SEC Tournament Championship game.

While he had already declared for the 2024 NBA Draft, Clayton Jr. decided to return to Florida for the 2024-25 season. During his senior year, he averaged 18.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.2 steals playing 32.6 minutes in 39 regular season games. He was named the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player for 2025, a Consensus First-Team All-American, and First-Team All-SEC.
