In the longest tour-level final of 2025, 19-year-old Victoria Mboko captured the Hong Kong Open title after a grueling 2-hour, 49-minute battle against Spain’s Cristina Bucsa, winning 7-5, 6-7(9), 6-2. The Canadian teenager, who fired nine aces in the final, claimed her second WTA title of the season and will debut in the world’s Top 20 next week. An extraordinary leap for someone ranked No. 350 just a year ago.

It was a clash defined by resilience and shot-making under pressure. Bucsa, contesting her first career final, pushed Mboko to the brink in an epic second-set tiebreak, but the 19-year-old rebounded to close out the decider in dominant fashion. “Today I feel like it was such high-quality tennis from Cristina,” Mboko said afterward. “Even when she was down in the match, she was able to come back and play some amazing shots. I had to really stay in there with her and try my best to bring out my full power. I want to give huge credit to her.”

Mboko’s Montreal Magic to Hong Kong Heroics

The victory extends a breakout season that has reshaped Mboko’s trajectory. Since July, she’s won seven deciding sets, four coming this week in Hong Kong and three during her surprise title run in Montreal in August. Her triumph also surpassed Iga Swiatek’s Seoul win over Ekaterina Alexandrova as the year’s longest final, eclipsing it by six minutes.

Saturday’s semifinal win over fellow Canadian Leylah Fernandez was another example of her grit, as she rallied past her compatriot in three sets to reach the championship match. It’s a level of endurance that’s fast becoming Mboko’s trademark.

Her rise hasn’t been without obstacles. A wrist injury suffered in Montreal briefly slowed her summer momentum, but the teenager returned with renewed confidence and composure on hard courts. With an overall 60-14 record this season (including 20-10 in WTA main draws), Mboko has built a profile of a player already capable of going the distance.
