Veteran Journalist Christine Brennan Slams WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert Over Caitlin Clark Treatment

Christine Brennan doesn't mince words while attacking Cathy Engelbert over the league's treatment towards Caitlin Clark.

Veteran columnist and journalist Christine Brennan ripped into the WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert for the way the league has treated Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark. Brennan has a book, named “On Her Game: Caitlin Clark and the Revolution in Women’s Sports,” coming out shortly. Recently, Brennan shared an excerpt from the book about a controversial moment during the WNBA playoffs last year.

The USA Today Sports journalist shared how she was surprised by the way Engelbert and the rest of the league hasn’t taken a stand for the reigning Rookie of the Year. Speaking on WHO13 News in Iowa, the veteran took a dig at the league commissioner and said, “The way (Englebert) has trouble talking about Caitlin Clark, or if she’s asked about Caitlin she’ll say Caitlin and Angel. Well, she wasn’t asked about Angel. You know, she was asked about Caitlin. … This incredible inability to deal with the facts and state the obvious, it is astounding to me.”

She added, “How Cathy Engelbert doesn’t come out after the Marina Mabrey hit and say, ‘That’s unacceptable, the refs got it wrong. You should have been kicked out then. You weren’t. But now I’m going to kick you out and now you’re suspended for another game or two.’ That’s just unacceptable behavior for someone who’s that important to the league or to any player, right? (The league) can’t do that.”

The fact that Clark has been attacked by the players and the league since her debut isn’t hidden from anyone. Time and again, several top names have been involved in controversies regarding their behavior with the Fever icon.

What Is Christine Brennan’s New Book About?

It goes without saying that Clark maintained her stardom from college to the WNBA. In her rookie season, the 23-year-old averaged 19.2 points, 8.4 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game and led the WNBA in assists and 3-pointers made. Even though the WNBA has been around since 1997, Clark has brought a storm and taken its popularity to the next level. Brennan in her book talks about the revolution brought by the youngster, along with the times she had to face unfair treatment by others.

The journalist writes in the introduction of her book, “What was going on? Was this because Clark is white and straight in a league that is 74% Black or mixed-race, with a sizable gay population?…Was it because of her eight-year $28 million Nike shoe deal?… Was it jealousy, Was it all of the above?”

Brennan covered six weeks of Clark’s first season in the WNBA and covered all the questions she asked to the Fever star during the press conferences.
