Venus Williams Accepts Wildcard, Unites with 2021 Finalist for Women’s Doubles at 2025 US Open

Williams will compete in all three events at a Grand Slam for the first time since 1998.

Venus Williams is stepping up for her favorite game at the age of 45 and it’s giving fans a motivational story. The former US Open winner made her comeback on the hard-court in front of the home crowd when she played the first-round fixture on Monday. The seven-time major champion fell to Karolina Muchova 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. However, the crowd hailed him for showing a great fight.

Venus became the oldest singles player at the hard-court tournament since Renee Richards in 1981. She missed the Grand Slam action for two years but still, showed great display in the singles match. During the second set, she produced dominant performance with powerful groundstrokes in front of a supportive crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Venus Williams Joins Hands with Leylah Fernandez to Feature in Women’s Doubles at US Open

Fans can now see Venus Williams again on the court at the same competition after the wildcard announcement from the US Open. The 45-year-old received a wild card in the women’s doubles draw on Tuesday. The American legend will pair with Leylah Fernandez. She will compete in all three events at a Grand Slam for the first time since 1998.

Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez will kick off their doubles campaign against sixth-seeded Lyudmyla Kichenok and Ellen Perez. The two-time US Open champion has already competed in the women’s singles and mixed doubles but failed to cross the opening round.

Williams is the former No. 1 player in the doubles and she has left a big legacy in this category. Venus has won 14 major doubles titles with sister Serena. Her last doubles glory at Grand Slam came in 2016 at Wimbledon. Her last US Open doubles appearance was in 2022 when Serena appeared for her farewell tournament.

Venus Williams has won all four Grand Slams in doubles and her last US Open doubles title came in 2009 with her sister, Serena. She also won three gold medals (2000, 2008 and 2012) at Olympics in doubles category. The 45-year-old American legend made her return after 16 months to the professional tennis last month at the Citi DC Open and crashed out in the opening round.
