France Triumphs Over Germany in Nations League Third-Place Clash as Cherki Shines

France secured a comfortable 2-0 victory against home-side Germany in the third-placed game in the UEFA Nations League 2025. Kylian Mbappe who opened the scoring of the contest also reached the 50-goal mark for France. Germany after the defeat to Portugal in the final four and France will go on medal-less on their home turf.

Michael Olise sealed the deal for the French team in the second half. Despite having a major portion of the ball, Germany managed six shots on target against France.

‘Cherki Has Technical Qualities’ – Didier Deschamps on Rayan Cherki’s Assessment

French International Rayan Cherki has impressed a lot of heads in his International campaign. Playing with freedom, the youngster scored a brilliant volley against Spain in their 5-4 defeat in the final four.

Putting up a commendable performance against France, manager Didier Deschamps gave his assessment of the 20-year-old. Speaking on Cherki’s traits, Deschamps in his post-match interview said:

“He has technical qualities… the pass, the finishing too… So much the better for him. Cherki? If all the players did the same. He is an element that has a lot of potential.”

Cherki despite grabbing an assist and a goal in the semifinal couldn’t land his nation to the final stage. Given it’s just the start for the youngster, the Lyon man will see plenty of opportunities alongside his seniors like Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele.

Plenty of youngsters have come up in the 2024/25 season given their abilities and contributions. Florian Wirtz of Germany and Desire Doue from France have also caught plenty of attention this summer. Wirtz who is speculated to be moving to Liverpool and Doue who lit up the UCL final have a huge future ahead of them.

Julian Nagelsmann after a disappointing Nations League tournament on home turf will look back to fill in the voids. Having lost the semi-final to Portugal and the third-place contest, Germany still wait for their first trophy since the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2017.
