Trump Stirs Up Commanders Name Controversy – Threatens To Block Plans for New Stadium

The Washington Commanders find themselves caught up in yet another controversial aspect involving their team name. President Donald Trump has once again ignited the issue at hand by threatening to block the team’s plan for a new stadium if the team does not revert to its previous name, the Washington Redskins.

Why Does Trump Want Washington To Go Back to the Redskins?

Having changed the name of their football team from the Washington Redskins to the Washington Football Team, and then to the Commanders in 2022 after the former was seen as offensive and racial towards Native Americans, Trump wants the decision to be reversed.

In fact, the President of the United States has not limited this to the Commanders, as he has also indicated that the Cleveland Guardians should do the same and revert to the Cleveland Indians.

Taking to social media, Trump made his intentions quite clear as he revealed he may not allow the Commanders to build a new stadium unless they get rid of their current name and rebrand it to the Redskins. It is his belief that the Native Americans are being treated unfairly.

“I may put a restriction on them that if they don’t change the name back to the original ‘Washington Redskins,’ and get rid of this ridiculous moniker, ‘Washington Commanders,’ I won’t make a deal for them to build a stadium in Washington.”

Can Trump Actually Block the Commanders’ New Stadium Plans?

Whether or not Trump can actually prevent Washington’s new stadium from being built is a debatable topic, and one that does not have a decisive answer at the moment.

The land where the new stadium is set to come up was under the federal government, but former President Joe Biden signed a bill in January that transferred it to the District of Columbia.

Many sports franchises across the US faced issues with team names linked to Native Americans, and eventually, Washington decided to drop the Redskins moniker despite several years of resistance from Daniel Snyder, the previous owner of the franchise.

In 2023, after the franchise was sold to billionaire Josh Harris, the new owner made it quite clear that the ‘Commanders’ name was here to stay, and that they would not go back on it again.

On the field, the Dan Quinn-led team is looking to do one better than last year, where surprisingly the Commanders made it all the way to the NFC Championship game. Jayden Daniels will be starting his second year under center, and he will have more help as Washington underwent a strong offseason this time around.
