Tottenham Boss Eyes Long-Awaited Silverware in Europa League Showdown Against Man United.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou addressed the media with passion and purpose in Bilbao on Tuesday. He set the tone ahead of Wednesday night’s Europa League final against Manchester United. Spurs are chasing their first trophy since 2008 and first European silverware since 1984.

The Australian made clear that all focus remains on delivering success. Postecoglou said, “This is such a big game. There is an opportunity to fulfil at least the main task which is to bring trophies to the club.”

After an extremely underwhelming Premier League campaign, there’s uncertainty around Postecoglou’s future. However, the 59-year-old dismissed speculation as irrelevant, saying, “Whatever happens beyond tomorrow is kind of irrelevant when you think about the opportunity that exists right now.”

No Clown, No Distraction

The media has been harsh on both Man United and Spurs ahead of this final. Mainly because both teams are just hovering over the Premier League relegation zone this year. The Red Devils are sitting in 16th position and Spurs and in 17th position. Hence, this final is the one hope of redemption for both teams.

Both teams have no chance of ending up at even the top half of the table. Hence, this is also their only chance to qualify for European competition next season. One media report even suggested that Postecoglou might be remembered as a ‘clown’ if Spurs fail to lift the trophy.

Postecoglou hit back strongly at the article, saying, “Irrespective of what happens tomorrow, I’m not a clown and I never will be, mate. I’m really disappointed that you would use such terminology about a person who for 26 years without any favours from anyone has worked his way to a position where he’s leading out a club in a European major competition.”

He was also firm when he was asked about this potentially being his penultimate game in charge, saying, “I’ve been in this position before… I’ve always navigated that pretty well because nothing is more important than my responsibility to this football club and its fans.”

Richarlison’s Rise, Son’s Return for Europa League Final

On the brighter side of things for the Spurs coach, captain Son Heung-Min is fit and expected to play. He has recovered well from a recent injury, saying, “He is so important to the group… such an important figure at this football club. It would be great to cap that off with a trophy for him.”
