Sophie Cunningham stresses importance of protecting locker room

The WNBA is entering a decisive stretch of the season, but the latest headlines come from players away from playoff contention. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese was suspended by her team after making controversial comments about the roster.

Sophie Cunningham, who is sidelined with a season-ending knee injury, used her podcast to address Reese’s remarks. The Indiana Fever guard has stayed active off the court despite missing postseason action, regularly sharing her views on happenings of the league.

“No that’s not great and I get when you’re losing and it’s been a frustrating season, like everyone is feeling those emotions,” Cunningham said. “And when I say everyone, it’s not just her, I’m sure her teammates feel it, her coaches feel it, the organization feels, the fans, like literally everyone feels that.”

“And there’s some things that you, and this is coming from me, there is some things that you can’t say. And I think one of my biggest things is I’m a very team-first person. Like I always put the team before my feelings and I think that should be a standard. So you got to protect your locker room and so you just can’t be saying everything your feeling because it’s just not a good look.”

Angel Reese’s Suspension Follows Critical Remarks

The Chicago Sky’s WNBA season fell short of expectations, leading to frustration across the organization. Angel Reese, one of the team’s standout players, voiced her concerns about the quality of the roster.

“We have to get good players. We have to get great players. That’s a non-negotiable for me,” Reese told reporters last week.

Her comments quickly drew attention, and the Sky moved to discipline the forward. Angel Reese was suspended for the first half of the team’s game against the Las Vegas Aces, with the organization citing “statements detrimental to the team.”
