Barbora Krejcikova makes a monumental comeback against Taylor Townsend in the 2025 US Open.
It was a heartbreaking day for Taylor Townsend. The American player’s miraculous US Open run came to a sudden halt after Barbora Krejcikova showed a small miracle of her own. Krejcikova trailed almost the entire match; in fact, such was Townsend’s dominance that her win seemed inevitable. But as it turns out, the Czech wasn’t in any mood to back down, and that ultimately led to an epic showdown. A contest which had tears, cheers, comebacks, and eight matchpoints!
The match started with relative ease for Taylor Townsend. It quickly became clear to everyone that the 29-year-old was once again bringing her A-game to the competition. In the first set, it looked like Krejcikova just had no answer to Townsend’s tenacity and pace. However, things began to change in the second set. While Townsend again had a quick start (at one point leading 5-4 with a match point), Krejcikova didn’t back down.
As the second set progressed to the tiebreaker, once again Townsend took the lead. The American went ahead 6-3, but somehow Krejckova fought back. Every time Townsend got a match point, Krejcikova found a way to catch up. Even Townsend became hopeless after Krejcikova survived her 8th match point and ended up winning the set. The 29-year-old was left sitting on her chair, lamenting and shaking. The momentum was with the Czech, and mentally, Taylor Townsend was shaken.

In the end, Krejcikova won the match 1-6, 7-6 (13), 6-3. Townsend’s dream had shattered. “It just stings, because I literally gave everything,” Townsend said after the match. “She came up with some really, really great tennis in moments where she was down, and I thought I had it.” Everyone thought that she did. But then, while it was a heartbreak for Townsend, the moment was a personal victory for Barbora Krejcikova.
Krejicikova entered the US Open months after injuries threatened her tennis career. “Just four months ago, I couldn’t play or practice. I had a huge pain in my back and didn’t know if I’d ever be back,” Krejcikova revealed. “This is huge. I still cannot believe it.” She was, of course, referring to her back injury.
Krejcikova has had an on-and-off struggle with his back since late 2024. The 2-time Grand Slam winner hasn’t been the same since those back problems became more prominent. Even in this match, Barbora Krejcikova didn’t start well and just grew into it as the match progressed. Townsend had troubled Krejcikova a lot with her aggressive shots and runs towards the net.
In fact, Taylor Townsend led in 13 of the 14 statistical metrics. The only one where Krejcikova led was total winners (37 for Townsend and 43 for Krejcikova). Heartbreakingly, Townsend won a total of 121 points while Krejcikova won just 111. Certainly, that’s a tough loss to take for Townsend, who’ll take some time to get over it. As for Krejcikova, this could be a major confidence booster. A proof that despite injuries, her grit hasn’t disappeared.

A passionate sports fan since childhood, it was always my dream to cover the peak of human potential. Baseball, Tennis, and Football (or Soccer) have been closest to my heart. From Rafael Nadal’s never-say-die attitude to Roger Federer’s beautiful backhand, I’ve seen it all. Prior to the Playoffs, I’ve worked in EssentiallySports and Pro Football and Sports Network.

Perhaps that’s why I love indulging in some fun banter and always try to inculcate a debate through my work. That’s why I encourage the readers to express their views freely – after all, that’s what makes sports fun.
