In-form Taylor Fritz faces Lorenzo Sonego in a contrasting-style battle at Cincinnati 2025.
Fourth seed Taylor Fritz will face 31st seed Lorenzo Sonego today in the third round of the Cincinnati Open 2025. Fritz, the top-ranked American, advanced with a first-round bye and a hard-fought win over qualifier Emilio Nava. Sonego’s path was smoother, cruising past Jacob Fearnley and Zizou Bergs in straight sets.

Fritz is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career. Titles in Eastbourne and Stuttgart, highlighted by wins over Jenson Brooksby and Alexander Zverev, have propelled him to a career-high No. 4 ranking. His finest moment came at Wimbledon, where he reached his first Grand Slam semifinal before bowing out to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. Consistency has been a hallmark too. Quarterfinals in Geneva, Washington, and Delray Beach, plus a semifinal in Toronto, backed by strong serving stats with 579 aces, an 80% first-serve points win rate, and 43% break-point conversion from 302 chances.

Sonego’s season has been quieter. The Italian’s best results include quarterfinal runs at the Melbourne Open and Open 13, along with a fourth-round appearance at Wimbledon. However, he’s struggled for deep runs elsewhere, most recently exiting Toronto in the second round. He’s posted 216 aces, won 73% of first-serve points, taken 26% of return points on first serves, and converted 41% of break chances from 191 opportunities.
Taylor Fritz leads Lorenzo Sonego 5-2 in their head-to-head, a rivalry that has quietly spanned all surfaces and stages. Their first clash came on the grass of Wimbledon in 2018, where the American prevailed in four sets. Sonego struck back at the 2020 Roland Garros, grinding out a straight-sets win that hinged on two tight tiebreaks.
The pair traded blows again in 2021, with Fritz edging their Doha meeting and Sonego responding with a semifinal victory on the clay of Cagliari. Since then, however, the momentum has been all one way. From the 2021 Paris Masters to their 2023 Cincinnati battle and most recently at the 2025 Miami Open, Fritz has reeled off three straight wins, dominating this rivalry.

Fritz’s form, confidence, and serving firepower should carry him through, but Sonego’s variety could make this tighter than the odds suggest.
