After all the hype surrounding the potential first three-peat in the history of the Super Bowl era, Super Bowl LIX came to an end with the Philadelphia Eagles decimating the Kansas City Chiefs, crushing their chance at creating history. From the very beginning, the Eagles looked like the more dominant team on both sides of the ball.

Kansas City’s offense could not get anything going as they faced heavy pressure from the Eagles’ front four. The pass rush was so good that Patrick Mahomes didn’t have enough time to find open receivers. As a matter of fact, Philly’s D-line was instrumental in containing Mahomes to the point that he couldn’t even go on his traditional scrambling runs. With so much pressure, Mahomes was unsettled and ended up throwing two picks, the first of which was returned for a touchdown.

On the flip side, Philadelphia’s offense kept the scoreboard ticking, capitalizing on the Chiefs’ mistakes and playing sensibly despite running back Saquon Barkley being neutralized. What this game proved though was the fact that Mahomes is human after all. The usually composed player that he is was completely flustered leading to one of his worst performances since becoming a starter in 2018.

Ever since Tom Brady retired and Patrick Mahomes became the face of the NFL, the comparisons between the two players started in the media. Mahomes, to his credit, has achieved a lot in such a short time. Moreover, both players are on a similar trajectory path when it comes to collecting rings.

Brady with the Patriots won three Super Bowls in his first four years as a starter. Mahomes, on the other hand, had won three in six years prior to Super Bowl LIX. After Brady’s first three rings, he went one full decade before adding to his collection which means that Mahomes still has time on his hands. However, Brady had longevity playing till his mid-40s and winning as well. Whether or not Mahomes will be able to replicate that is something only time will tell.

But, since the media has been quick to draw parallels between the two, it is worth noting a few stats from their Super Bowls that highlight a huge gap between the two. Brady, in his 10 Super Bowl appearances has thrown a record 21 touchdowns and just 6 picks whereas Mahomes through his 5 appearances in the big game 10 touchdowns but already has 7 interceptions to go along with it.

Comparing Mahomes to Brady and calling him the potential GOAT so early in his career has thrown much of the NFL media in a bad light.In this year’s Super Bowl, Mahomes faced a similarly daunting task of mounting a comeback in order to lift the Lombardi. He, however, was unable to come back from a 24-0 deficit at the half and fell to a 40-6 deficit before putting up a couple of scores that didn’t matter in the end.

As for Brady, he was down 21-3 to the Atlanta Falcons at the half in Super Bowl LI and went down 28-3 at one point in the third quarter before he led a resurgence that ended with him winning his fifth ring.

One more important argument he has in his favor is that he has defeated Mahomes in the head-to-head twice when it mattered in the postseason. So, for the time being, at least, the GOAT debate will need to take a back seat with Brady’s 7-3 Super Bowl record looking far more superior than Mahomes’ 3-2.
