Storm vs. Lynx: Seattle Storm Snap End Minnesota’s 9-0 Start in WNBA, Makes Three in a Row in Commissioner’s Cup

Minnesota will now return back home and host the Los Angeles Sparks (4-7) on Saturday.

Nneka Ogwunike and Erica Wheeler combined for 41 points as Seattle Storm overcame the undefeated Minnesota Lynx 94-84. With this victory, Seattle snapped Minnesota’s nine-game winning streak. The Storm secured a crucial home and conference win in Commissioner’s Cup action, where they improved to 3-1.

The Minnesota Lynx entered with a 9-0 regular season start which also included a 3-0 Commissioner’s Cup mark. The Lynx required one more victory to become only the third team in the WNBA history to take a 10-0 start in the season. However, the streak was halted by the Storm through Offensive rain storm. All five Seattle starters record in double figure and two players dropped 20-point performances.

Seattle Storm’s Second-Half Surge Hands Over Minnesota Lynx First Defeat of the Season

Both teams had a toe-to-toe clash in the first half and Lynx held a 49-48 lead at halftime. Napheesa Collier led Minnesota with 15 first-half points. Minnesota went on a 11-3 run to stretch their lead to nine points but Seattle responded later in the third period. Dominique Malonga’s three-pointer before the buzzer assured Storm to take a 68-65 lead heading to the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was intense and Minnesota felt the pressure of first defeat. With one minute left in the game, the Lynx reduced the deficit to just one point through MacBride’s 3-pointer. Seattle Storm went on a 9-0 closing run to take the game. It was the third straight win for the Storm and they also moved to top of the conference table in the Commissioner’s Cup.

Napheesa Collier finished with 25 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 blocks, while shooting 9 of 23 from the field. She completed her 3000 WNBA career points but couldn’t prevail the defeat against the Storm’s strong front court. Courtney Williams had her worst performance of the season, managing just 3 points. Kayla McBride chipped in 19 points and six assists, while Alanna Smith had 14.

As for the Storm, Nneka Ogwumike scored a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Erica Wheeler added 20 points and nine assists, while Skylar Diggins contributed 18. Ezi Magbegor chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds. Gabby Williams added 12 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals. The Storm bench only scored 10 points and they leaned heavily on their starters.

New York Liberty remains the only undefeated team in the WNBA season with a 9-0 record. They will also have a stop button soon but, if they extend their winning run for four more games, they will tie the record for the best WNBA start in the history. Minnesota will now return back home and host the Los Angeles Sparks (4-7) on Saturday. Seattle Storm will go on a three-game road trip and take the Valkyries next on Saturday.
