Stephen Curry Surpasses LeBron James with Another 50-Point Explosion as Warriors Clinch 5th Seed in Dramatic Win Over Grizzlies

Gulshan Sharma

The Warriors are now 18-2 when Jimmy Butler and Steph Curry are in the lineup together.

Stephen Curry produced one of the most dominating performances in the Warriors’ 134-125 win over the Grizzlies, which helped them clinch the fifth seed in the Western Conference, including the tie-breaker over Memphis. The veteran guard highlighted another 50-point performance on Tuesday and set multiple records in the masterpiece show.

Stephen Curry finished with 52 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists while shooting 16-for-31 from the floor and 12-for-20 from 3-point range. Curry dropped 32 points in the first half to help the Warriors take a 8-point lead at halftime.

The 11-time All-Star guard passed Jerry West (25,192 career points) for 25th place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. He hit two free throws midway through the third quarter to surpass the NBA legend.

Curry Set Multiple Records in 52-Point Outburst, Surpasses LeBron James

The veteran guard made one of his best-ever runs and surpassed LeBron James in most 50-point games. LeBron, the leading scorer of all time, has scored 50 points 14 times during his career. Curry dropped his 15th 50-point performance in his career, one more than The King. He is now tied with Damian Lillard for the 7th most in NBA history.

Following a 32-point outburst in first-half, Steph Curry joined LeBron James for the third-most 30-point halves (22) in the play-by-play era (1997-98). He is only behind Kobe Bryant (28) and James Harden (30). Curry also has the most halves with 8+ 3-pointers (6) in the play-by-play era.

Stephen Curry exited from the third quarter with 11 made 3s, three away from tying Klay Thompson’s record. However, he fell short of joining his former teammate as he recorded 12 three-pointers in the game. However, he upgraded his own record for most games with 10+ threes. It was his 27th instance when Curry had more than 10 made 3s, 25.7% of all 10+ 3PM games in league history.

Curry is the first player to record 50 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals in a game since Anthony Davis in 2016 vs the Nuggets. He also set a franchise record as Curry surpassed Rick Barry (14) for the second-most 50-point games in Warriors history behind only Wilt Chamberlain (105).

“The guy is 37 years old. Incredible. Fifty-two points with people draped all over him all game long. The conditioning. The skill. The audacity. The belief. It’s just incredible to watch Steph at work,” Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said on Curry’s performance.

Warriors own tiebreaker over Grizzlies

Despite Curry’s shooting explosion, the Grizzlies fought hard and led by four with 3:38 left in the fourth quarter, thanks to a floater in the lane by Jackson. However, Golden State regained the lead with two free throws by Butler. The Warriors successfully attempted eight free throws in the final two and a half minutes to clinch the game.

Apart from Curry, Jimmy Butler scored 27 points on 12/12 on FTs. He fouled out Jaren Jackson Jr. and ripped a steal from Morant late fourth quarter. Draymond Green scored 13 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists in his triple-double.

Ja Morant led the Grizzlies with 36 points and six assists. Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 22, and Desmond Bane added 19. Santi Aldama chipped in 18 points and Rookie Zach Edey had a career-high-tying 16 boards along with 10 points and four blocks.

Golden State now jumped Memphis for the No. 5 seed in the West with seven games left. With this win, they also own tiebreakers over the Grizzlies and Timberwolves. The Warriors are now 18-2 when Jimmy Butler and Steph Curry are in the lineup together.
