Stefanos Tsitsipas Injury – Why Did Tsitsipas Withdraw From ATP Vienna Open 2025?

Horrific season continues for the former World No. 3

Greek sensation Stefanos Tsitsipas has withdrawn from the 2025 ATP Vienna Open, just hours before his opening round encounter. The 27-year-old was handed a tough draw this week, and was set to open his account against No. 4 seed Lorenzo Musetti. However, an injury concern has forced Tsitsipas out of yet another tournament.

Tsitsipas took part in the 2025 Six Kings Slam last week. The World No. 25 entered the Riyadh exhibition as a replacement for British southpaw Jack Draper, but lost in the quarterfinal stage. Tsitsipas fought hard against four-time Grand Slam champion Jannik Sinner, but to no avail. Nonetheless, he managed to pocket $1.5 million out of the solitary encounter.

The ongoing season has been extremely challenging for Stefanos Tsitsipas. A two-time finalist at the majors, he has seemingly been overpowered by the fresher talent on the circuit. Barring a championship run in Dubai, the former World No. 3 has not been able to cement his spot among the ATP’s elite superstars. He has a mediocre record of 22-18 so far (55% success rate).

Tsitsipas has officially pulled out of the ATP Erste Bank Open 2025 due to a back injury. He was scheduled to play his opener against Musetti two hours after the disappointing announcement. The Italian star will face lucky loser Hamad Medjedovic in the Round of 32 instead.

“Unfortunately, Stefanos Tsitsipas withdrew from the Erste Bank Open due to a back injury. He will be replaced by Lucky Loser Hamad Medjedovic. Get well soon and hopefully see you next year,” read the statement from the tournament. Earlier this month, Tsitsipas had pulled out of the Rolex Shanghai Masters due to a leg injury.

Considering his horrific luck with injuries, it will be interesting to see how Stefanos Tsitsipas’ season progresses. The 27-year-old might look to play either the Paris Masters, or his home event in Athens. While his fans would have been hopeful of a strong comeback after positive signs at the Six Kings Slam, it was not meant to be.
