2025 NHL Playoffs Seeding
The postseason features 16 teams, divided equally between the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each conference’s top three teams from both divisions secure automatic playoff berths, accounting for six teams per conference. The remaining two spots in each conference are filled by wild card teams, which are the next two teams with the highest point totals, regardless of division.
The seeding is determined as follows:
1. Divisional Seeding (Top 3 Teams Per Division)
The NHL has two conferences: Eastern Conference and Western Conference, each with two divisions.
The top three teams from each division (based on regular season points) automatically qualify for the playoffs.
These teams are seeded 1st to 3rd in their respective divisions.
2. Wild Card Seeding (Two Additional Teams Per Conference)
After the top three teams from each division are set, the next two highest-ranked teams in each conference (regardless of division) qualify as wild cards.
These two teams are seeded as 7th and 8th in their respective conferences.
3. Playoff Matchups (First Round Seeding)
The 1st seed in each conference plays the 2nd wild card (8th seed).
The 2nd seed in each division plays the 3rd seed from the same division.
The 1st wild card (7th seed) faces the best division winner (1st overall seed in the conference).
4. Home-Ice Advantage
The team with the higher seed gets home-ice advantage in each round.
This means they will host Games 1, 2, 5, and 7 in a best-of-seven series.
5. Reseeding and Later Rounds
The NHL does not reseed teams after each round.
The bracket remains fixed, meaning teams advance based on the set playoff structure.

NHL Playoffs Format 2025
1. Number of Teams & Qualification
A total of 16 teams qualify—8 from the Eastern Conference and 8 from the Western Conference.
The top three teams from each division earn automatic playoff spots (6 teams per conference).
The next two best teams in each conference, regardless of division, qualify as Wild Card teams (2 per conference).
2. First Round Matchups
The first round is structured as follows:
The 1st seed in each conference plays the 2nd Wild Card team (8th seed).
The best division winner plays the 1st Wild Card team (7th seed).
The 2nd seed in a division plays the 3rd seed from the same division.
All matchups are best-of-seven series (first team to win 4 games advances).
3. Second Round (Division Finals)
The winners of the 2nd vs. 3rd seed matchup face the winner of the division winner vs. Wild Card matchup.
There is no reseeding after the first round.
The team with the better regular-season record gets home-ice advantage.
4. Conference Finals
The two remaining teams in each conference play in the Conference Finals.
The winners of these series advance to the Stanley Cup Finals.
Again, the team with the better regular-season record gets home-ice advantage.
5. Stanley Cup Finals
The Eastern Conference Champion faces the Western Conference Champion.
The team with the better regular-season record gets home-ice advantage in the Finals.
The series follows a 2-2-1-1-1 format:
Games 1 & 2 – Hosted by the team with home-ice advantage
Games 3 & 4 – Hosted by the opposing team
Game 5 (if needed) – Home-ice team
Game 6 (if needed) – Opposing team
Game 7 (if needed) – Home-ice team
6. Overtime Rules in the Playoffs
Unlike the regular season, overtime in the playoffs is sudden pause and played in 20-minute periods (5-on-5).
