Shedeur Sanders Last Priority for the Browns? The Order of Team Drills in OTAs Says So!

Shedeur Sanders, a highly touted quarterback from Colorado, experienced a surprising slide to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, when prior to the draft, many mock drafts had him drafted at least in the first round. He ultimately landed with the Cleveland Browns as the 144th overall pick, and despite his impressive college stats, accolades, high-profile and larger-than-life persona, questions about his fit landed him in Cleveland. While the talent is undoubtedly there, reports suggest than Sanders was “cocky,” during his team interviews, which may have contributed to his slide to the fifth round. However, Sanders has remained highly professional and has been unbothered by the slide. He is already working extremely hard to prove that he belongs in the NFL, and in the process may also make teams regret for not drafting him going forward.

As the Cleveland Browns kick off Organized Team Activities (OTAs), the team’s quarterback hierarchy is under scrutiny, with Sanders’ role in team drills raising eyebrows about his standing in the crowded Browns’ quarterback room. Let’s dive deeper.

Team Drills in OTAs- Where Does Sanders Stand?

In the Browns’ 2025 OTAs, the order of team drills has sparked some debate about Shedeur Sanders’ priority within the team. The Browns’ quarterback room is already stacked with veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, third-round rookie Dillon Gabriel, and the injured Deshaun Watson, who has shown tremendous progress trying to come back from his torn Achilles.

During OTAs, according to Browns’ Beat Writer Mary Kay Cabot, report indicates that Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel will take the No.1 and No.2 reps for the Browns when OTAs open. This means that Joe Flacco and Sanders could be competing for QB3 and QB4 positions when the OTAs arrive. Reports also state that Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel will split first-team reps, meanwhile Joe Flacco and Sanders will split second-team reps during the Cleveland Browns’ OTAs.

There are too many quarterbacks to choose from for the Browns, and they reportedly plan to conduct a “fair QB competition,” amongst the four quarterbacks. The competition is certainly stiff for Sanders and the rest of the Browns’ quarterbacks, and with Watson “determined,” to play in the 2025 season, look for OTAs to be high competitive, as each QB wants to prove that they can be a starting-level QB for the Browns.
