Sharks Recall Jimmy Schuldt Amid Roster Adjustments

The San Jose Sharks have brought back defenseman Jimmy Schuldt, just days after sending him down to the AHL for playoff eligibility reasons. His return gives the team an extra blue-liner ahead of their matchup against the Nashville Predators, a need they felt in Saturday’s loss to the Islanders when they played without a spare defenseman.

Schuldt, 29, made his long-awaited return to the NHL last week, playing in San Jose’s final game before the trade deadline. It was only his second NHL appearance, with his first coming nearly six years ago in April 2019 with the Vegas Golden Knights.

A steady two-way defenseman with strong puck-moving abilities, Schuldt has spent the last several years in the AHL, playing for the farm teams of Vegas, Buffalo, Seattle, and now San Jose. He signed a two-way contract with the Sharks last summer and has since become the captain of their AHL affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda. In 54 games this season, he’s tallied five goals and 13 assists while maintaining a solid +15 rating.

In his Sharks debut last week against the Avalanche, Schuldt logged over 14 minutes of ice time, recording three shots and a hit. He showed poise in limited minutes, controlled possession well, and contributed to the team’s defensive efforts.

San Jose, currently navigating a rebuilding phase, could use reliable performances from depth players like Schuldt. With the recent trade of their top defenseman, Jake Walman, to the Oilers, opportunities have opened up for younger talents like Shakir Mukhamadullin and Henry Thrun, along with experienced depth players like Schuldt. His recall marks one of the Sharks’ four permitted call-ups after the trade deadline, giving him a chance to earn more ice time as the season progresses.
