Athleticism has once again met art. As the NBA world is gearing up for the highly-anticipated All-Star Weekend, Converse has already taken social media by storm. The popular shoe brand unveiled Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s first signature sneakers.

Designed with an aim to bring back sturdiness in basketball sneakers, SHAI 001 are a result of Gilgeous-Alexander’s own creativity. The brand confirmed that the 26-year-old was instrumental in the design process and shared a few hand-drawn sketches that the design team worked upon and brought the pair to life.
Designed in butter colorway, the shoes feature a sleek upper featuring a zipper which runs down the center. The shoes feature Nike’s Zoom Air cushioning tech in the midsole and have an airbag at the forefoot.

As Shai announced his signature shoe, he reflected upon the passion has designed it with. Shai said, “I poured my heart and soul into the Shai 001, and I’m proud to share it with the world.”
“We made the Shai 001 a versatile shoe for everyone—from the athlete who’s in the gym three times a day to the kids who just want to express themselves on or off the court,” he added.
Shai, who is maintaining a solid average of 32.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game this season, said that he wishes to bring back the era when basketball sneakers would be performative enough.
He said, “I hope my signature sneaker can inspire everybody to explore the beauty in being different … I miss the era of when signature basketball sneakers were performative enough to be played in, but fashionable enough to be worn. I want to restore that feeling.” Shai is now the tenth player to have received a signature shoe from Converse. He joined Chuck Taylor, Julius Erving, Magic Johnson, Larry Johnson, Kevin Johnson, Dennis Rodman, Dwyane Wade and Elton Brand.
