Sacramento Kings Reportedly Pause Malik Monk Trade Talks, Maintain Interest in Russell Westbrook

There were reports that Monk was about to leave Kings as they wanted to create space for Westbrook.

The Sacramento Kings have reportedly paused talks of trading Malik Monk despite their continued interest in signing veteran Russell Westbrook. Earlier there were reports that Monk was on his way out of the Kings after spending three seasons with them as Sacramento wanted to create space for unrestricted free agent Russell Westbrook. The reports further suggested that the front office and head coach Doug Christie were willing to add Westbrook as a key sixth player in the roster.

According to @TheSteinLine, Sacramento is no longer actively involving Malik Monk in trade talks.

Stein also mentioned that the Kings are exploring paths to adding Russell Westbrook to the fold without losing Monk.

However, per latest development, the Kings are still interested in signing nine-time NBA All-Star, but they are not willing to part ways with Monk. They are exploring alternative pathways to open a spot in the backcourt while keeping the core intact. Talking about it, NBA insider Marc Stein stated on The Stein Line, “The Kings have maintained an interest in Russell Westbrook, sources say. They have indeed explored the possibility of creating a backcourt opening for Westbrook by other means rather than dealing Monk.”

Sacramento Kings to Sign Jonathan Kuminga and Russell Westbrook?

Earlier this offseason, the Kings’ pursuit of Westbrook was downplayed after they signed Dennis Schroder and Zach LaVine. Not only this, but the reports further state that the Kings can push to add Jonathan Kuminga to the roster as well since the Golden State Warriors are seemingly on the verge of losing negotiations with him. While the Kings already have solidified their guard rotation, they are no longer afraid of adding depth to the roster.

While Kuminga entered free agency with an average of 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game with the Dubs in the recent past season, Westbrook has had another pivotal season with the Denver Nuggets. He averaged 13.1 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists and thrived as a second-ball handler.

On the other hand, Malik Monk has had another valuable season with the Kings. He transitioned from being a bench player to having regular starts last season while averaging 17.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 5.6 assists across 65 games. If Sacramento is willing to keep Monk and get Westbrook, they could trade another player and open a roster space to sign Westbrook. There are indications that they might let go of Terence Davis as his contract is not guaranteed for next season.
