Ruben Amorim Speaks On Manchester United Defeat to Grimsby Town in Epic Carabao Cup 2025 Shootout

Mayur Dedwal

Fourth Division side Grimsby Town took the football world by storm as they knocked Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup on penalties. The Red Devils after going two goals down in the first half came from behind in the last 15 fifteen minutes taking the game to penalties.

Losing out in the shootout 12-11, their new signing Bryan Mbuemo missed the penalty as Andre Onana failed to keep Grimsby’s final penalty out. Manchester manager Ruben Amorim was seen in shock in the post-game interview as he implied the squad lacks determination and he sent apologies to the fans.

Ruben Amorim’s Reaction to Manchester United’s Defeat

It’s the first time United have failed to progress against a team at the level of Grimsby Town. Now three games without a win in the 2025/26 campaign, Amorim’s troubles went from bad to worse on Wednesday.

After Manchester United’s humiliating Carabao Cup exit, manager Ruben Amorim expressed deep frustration in his post-match interview with ITV, highlighting the team’s poor performance and lack of commitment:

“In the end for me, it was worse than at the beginning. It’s not about results or penalties. I wasn’t thinking about the penalty to go on stage. I just thought… The way we play and face competition. At one moment everything is so important. I think the players spoke really loudly about what they want today.”

Amorim also suggested that the problems are bigger than the club environment as he continues,

“I think it’s not… It is hard to speak. Seven months here talking about the environment or whatever. It is more than that.”

“I’m shocked. Because we are in the moment. Everything is like… We make a lot of changes. We try to fight for things. But then when you have these moments, you need to show up. If you don’t, you can feel that something has changed. And something has to change and you’re not going to change 22 players again.”

Echoing a pattern of inconsistency—triumphing as champions in 2022-23 but have suffered early exits in the surrounding seasons. Including the fourth-round knockout in 2023-24 and now the defeat to Gimsby calls for profound changes.

Manchester United’s shocking Carabao Cup elimination by League Two minnows Grimsby Town, Ruben Amorim’s raw post-match reflections underscore a club in turmoil. With the Portuguese manager suggesting a lack of motivation, Old Trafford and its fans continue to ache for consistency.
