Spanish & Aussie veterans renew 2010s rivalry.
Making his first tour-level appearance in four years, Bernard Tomic runs into No. 7 seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the 2025 Mallorca Championships Round of 16 on Wednesday. The Australian won his first ATP Tour match since 2021 by beating Rinky Hijikata in the opening round. Meanwhile, RBA escaped a tough Round of 32 against Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina.
Roberto Bautista Agut is on the home stretch of an illustrious career. The 37-year-old is ranked at No. 43 in the world at the moment, and reached the semifinals at the HSBC Championships in Queen’s Club last week. He also made the last eight at Hamburg, defeating No. 2 seed Frances Tiafoe along the way. Unfortunately, Spanish fans will want to avoid looking at his 10-16 record in 2025 as they prepare for this blockbuster clash.

A former Top-20 player and infamously tagged as the ‘bad boy of tennis’ by several media outlets, Bernard Tomic is attempting a historic turnaround in his career. The Australian defeated two seeds in qualifying and stunned Grand Stand Arena on Tuesday to enter the pre-quarterfinals. In the process, he snared his maiden tour-level win in four years. The 32-year-old is a former Wimbledon quarterfinalist and also a two-time junior Grand Slam champion.
Roberto Bautista Agut leads the head-to-head against Bernard Tomic by 2-1. They will meet in Wednesday’s Round of 16 after six years.
The first ever match-up in this age old rivalry occurred in 2016, when Tomic thrashed his counterpart in the third round of Wimbledon. Since then, it has been smooth sailing for RBA in this head-to-head vs the man from down under. He did not drop a set en route to consecutive wins against Tomic – the last of which came at Toronto in 2019.

One of the key statistics will be Tomic’s first serves in, since the Aussie could rack up merely 53% points on second serve. Bautista Agut will look to frustrate the 6’5” veteran by extending the rallies and grinding it out. Expect plenty of backhand to backhand exchanges to take some zing out of the encounter. Provided the Spaniard can stay out of Tomic’s peak strike zone, he should prevail with some assistance from his home crowd.
Prediction: Roberto Bautista Agut in three sets.
