Rams-49ers Rivalry- Are the LA Rams the Biggest Rival of the San Francisco 49ers?

The Los Angeles Rams are hosting the San Francisco 49ers for Week 5’s Thursday Night Football action, in this heated NFC West rivalry. Both the teams are 3-1 for the season, with the Rams winning three of their matchups and only falling short to the Philadelphia Eagles, after leading for the majority of the game. Meanwhile the 49ers are hanging around, despite losing various players to injuries. We expected the 49ers to start the season in near full strength, however, injuries have struck this team again and again.

Matthew Stafford has been great this season for the Rams, already crossing 1000 yards in passing with 8 touchdowns on 2 INTs. He has a great QB rating of 106.1 this season, and is coming off a 3 TDs, 375 yards game. Similarly Puka Nacua is also off to a terrific start, leading the league in receiving yards and on pace to make history with the volume of receptions made.

The 49ers while on the winning column with a 3-1 record, despite a loss against the Jaguars, cannot seem to catch a break with injuries. Unfortunately, their QB1 Brock Purdy is out for TNF due to a toe injury. With him, Jennings, and Pearsall all out, the 49ers’ chances against the Rams looks weak, unless somebody in their squad explodes.

Rams-49ers Rivalry: When Did It Start and What’s the Story?

The 49ers/Rams rivalry began in 1950 and became one of the most intense rivalries in the NFL in the 1970’s as the two teams based out of California frequently competed for the NFC West Division title, which still is the case till this day.

While the rivalry lessened for a bit, during the mid 2010s and now in the 2020s, the rivalry once again returned with similar intensity following the Rams’ return to Los Angeles, the Super Bowl win in 2021 season, and subsequent playoff success.

The Ram/49ers rivalry has been played for 152 times, which includes two postseason meetings, with the Los Angeles Rams winning 71 games and the 49ers winning 78 times. The two teams have also tied 3 times, in their historic rivalry. However, in the recent times, the Rams have been catching up and are currently on a win streak.
