Rafael Nadal Marks Retirement Anniversary Practicing Alongside Alexandra Eala as Filipina Star Begins Bold 2026 Push

Eala sharpens her 2026 preparation as Nadal returns for a practice session.

Alexandra Eala stepped onto the court at the Rafa Nadal Academy on Wednesday and found herself across the net from a legend marking a personal milestone. Rafael Nadal, who retired on November 19, 2024, after reaching 1,000 wins, 92 titles and 22 majors, returned to the court exactly one year later for a practice session with the WTA world No. 50. The hit came as Nadal continues his close involvement with the Academy and as Eala prepares for a pivotal 2026 season. Nadal summed up the moment simply, “After a year, it felt great to be back on a tennis court. It was great to practice with you, Alex Eala. Next time I’ll be stronger.”

A Year After Retirement, Nadal Connects With a Rising Star

The session took place on the anniversary of Nadal’s final professional match, a Davis Cup defeat to Botic van de Zandschulp that closed his era at the top of men’s tennis. Spain fell to the Netherlands that day, and Nadal stepped away from competition with a resume few will match. One year later, he chose Eala as his first practice partner, highlighting both his link to the Academy and her growing status in the sport. Eala replied to him online with a simple, “Thank you for today, Rafa.”

Their connection is not new. Eala attended and graduated from the Rafa Nadal Academy in 2023, long after announcing herself as a talent by winning the 2022 US Open girls’ singles title. Nadal has kept a close eye on her progress, particularly as she climbed from No. 143 to the Top 50 this year. The Academy continues to be a hub for his values of discipline, education and steady work, traits he believes define a career more than trophies.

Eala has spoken openly about what Nadal has meant to her development. In a past interview, she said, “It is hugely inspirational to see him practicing almost every day and to see him in the gym. It’s really motivating to see his work ethic, and something that we can all copy from him. Of course, to be within the presence of all this history and especially here in the museum to see it again. I looked up to him as a kid and I saw a lot of similarities. You know, we’re both lefties. I loved how he fought on court. So I try to also channel that when I play tennis.”

Wednesday’s practice captured a symbolic passing of intent. Nadal reconnecting with the court that shaped his greatness, and Eala sharpening herself for the next step, as she eyes 2026 with renewed purpose.

I’m an academic turned sports writer from Raipur, India, specializing in the NFL, MMA, and tennis at The Playoffs. I previously wrote for Sportskeeda and hold a B.A. and M.A. in History. My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
