Portugal recorded history by becoming the only nation to win the UEFA Nations League twice. Following their victory over Spain in penalties, Cristiano Ronaldo lifted the third major international trophy Portugal has won.

Ronaldo who scored the equaliser in the second half had to be subbed off towards the end of the game. Watching the shootout from the sidelines, the 40-year-old went through nervous times as Ruben Neves sealed the deal with the winning penalty against Spain.

Portugal Makes Nations League History

After conceding the first goal, Portugal equalised just under five minutes through Nuno Mendes. Mendes who played a crucial role in the build-up of the second goal had a prolific game against Spain. Appearing all over the pitch, the 22-year-old fullback was a constant threat every time he got on the ball.

Spain whose rising stars came in the final as the favourites will be left heartbroken. Creating plenty around the box, Luis De La Fuente’s side faded from attacks towards the end of the game. Moreover, with Portugal’s substitute Rafael Leao causing trouble, the Spaniards were pushed to the backfoot

Social Media Erupts Over Morata’s Penalty Heartbreak

Alvaro Morata who came on from the bench missed Spain’s fourth penalty in the shootout. The Atletico Madrid striker seemed to have taken a half-effort as it landed straight in the palms of Diogo Costa.

Fans around the globe questioned Fuente’s decision to bring Morata on as he would make a point of his experience. Ronaldo was also seen consoling the former Juventus man as Portugal went on to win the Nations League 2025. Some also addressed his penalty effort to be poor as fans over social media were seen raging.

Portugal after beating Germany in the semifinals came out on top despite being the underdogs against Spain. Ronaldo who scored in the semi-final and final as well, will leave the Nations League on a high as he lifts the 2025 trophy.

Leading by examply, Ronaldo has now reached 138 goals for Portugal as he continues to impact the big stages. With emerging players having an example set, Portuguese football has taken a huge leap since the Ronaldo era.
