Penguins Should Prioritize Re-Signing Matt Grzelcyk

Why the Penguins should keep Matt Grzelcyk and how he can strengthen their blue line for the future.

As the offseason approaches, the Pittsburgh Penguins have a big decision to make regarding defenseman Matt Grzelcyk. Set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, the veteran blueliner has proven to be a solid fit in Pittsburgh. Given the team’s lack of depth on the left side, bringing him back on a short-term deal could be a smart move.

Matt Grzelcyk has one of his career’s best seasons. With a goal and 31 assists in 71 games, he’s set personal bests in multiple offensive categories. Perhaps more impressively, he’s averaging over 20 minutes of ice time per game for the first time in his career. His steady play and ability to log significant minutes have made him an essential piece of the Penguins’ blue line.

The Penguins’ decision to keep him at the trade deadline rather than move him for assets suggests they see value in his presence. Beyond just his on-ice contributions, Grzelcyk has also served as a mentor for the team’s younger defensemen. With Pittsburgh expected to go through a transition phase over the next couple of seasons, his leadership and experience could be vital.

A one- or two-year contract could make sense for both sides. The Penguins aren’t looking to completely rebuild, but they also aren’t in a position to make major acquisitions. Many insiders believe the organization hopes to be a serious playoff contender by the 2026–27 season. By that time, Grzelcyk might not be a top-four defenseman on a contending team, but he could still provide valuable depth when the Penguins are ready to make a push.

However, while a short-term deal might work well for Pittsburgh, it may not be ideal for Grzelcyk. After bouncing back this season, he’s likely looking for a longer-term contract—potentially his last big payday. Currently playing on a one-year, $2.75 million deal, he could attract three-year offers with a salary increase, especially with the rising cap and a limited free agent market.

If the Penguins can find the right balance between term and salary, keeping Grzelcyk around could be a win-win situation. His stability on the ice and leadership in the locker room make him a valuable asset, especially as Pittsburgh looks to retool rather than rebuild.
