Penguins Recall Matthew Nieto and Sebastian Aho to NHL Roster

Pittsburgh bolsters its lineup by recalling forward Matthew Nieto and defenseman Sebastian Aho as they gear up for the final stretch of the season.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have added some experience to their roster by recalling forward Matthew Nieto and defenseman Sebastian Aho. Together, they bring over 800 NHL games of experience, with Nieto, 32, accounting for the majority of that with 704 career games.

Nieto’s journey this season has been anything but smooth. After missing the start of the year due to knee surgeries, he struggled to find his rhythm, managing only three points in 31 games before being placed on waivers in late February. Since then, he has spent time in the AHL, where his offensive struggles have continued—posting just three points in eight games. Once a reliable fourth-liner, Nieto now finds himself fighting for a spot in the Penguins’ lineup.

Aho, on the other hand, has faced a frustrating season filled with injuries. After signing a two-year deal with Pittsburgh, he’s only appeared in 17 AHL games, notching seven assists. His most recent injury kept him out for nearly two months, but he returned to action earlier this month and has played three games since. Now, the Penguins are giving him a shot at the NHL level.

While neither player is expected to play a major role, they add valuable depth as the Penguins prepare to face the Vegas Golden Knights. With recent trade additions Thomas Novak and Conor Timmins ahead of them in the pecking order, Nieto and Aho may have to wait for an opportunity to make an impact.
