Paige Bueckers’ fairy tale story is continuing its path into the WNBA landscape. The point guard was selected by the Dallas Wings as the first draft pick of the night. Though the move was one of the worst-kept secrets since Dallas won the first pick last year. Bueckers, who led the UConn Huskies to a historic NCAA Women’s Championship this year, will look to continue her domination, now among the best in the business.
Bueckers stepped into another historic night, this time, off the court. Paige was present at The Shed at Hudson Yards in New York City. Monday night was a step forward for Paige from the shadows of college basketball. As soon as her name rang on the mic, it was certain Dallas would be the team she would move to.
An excited Wings social media team quickly arranged a one-on-one call with Head Coach Chris Koclanes and General Manager Curt Miller. As soon as the parties were connected through FaceTime, Miller exclaimed, “Let’s go.” Paige Bueckers, with a wide smile, greeted the duo.

Despite being miles apart from each other and barely having met outside the digital space, Paige Bueckers, Curt Miller, and Chris Koclanes were all matching the vibe, even clicking as if they knew one another. Bueckers, in the short video posted on the Dallas Wings’ Instagram account, suggested that she was excited to join the team and get down to Dallas.
There is a lot of work to pull through for the franchise that has consistently struggled with on-court performances. Dallas Wings’ last WNBA season standing was 11th overall and second from last in the Western Conference. They had a record of 31 losses and just 9 wins. This saw a complete overhaul for the franchise from the coaching staff to the management.
Coach Latricia Trammel was fired in October after spending two seasons in Dallas. Curt Miller was brought in as the General Manager. Miller has decades of experience in the business. He played the role of head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks and other college basketball teams.
He oversaw the signing of a young Chris Koclanes as the head coach. Now, with the draft of Paige Bueckers into the Dallas Wings, the management will look to build the team around the former UConn Huskies star. Bueckers has shown leadership skills on the court for the Huskies. And a similar role could be expected from her being one of the leaders in the Wings’ locker room.
