Denver Nuggets guard Russell Westbrook has been fined after the game against the New York Knicks in an NBA Cup encounter. NBA has now announced that the 2017 MVP has been fined $35,000. Meanwhile, the 36-year-old guard had a great night on the court but the Knicks had the final laugh with a 145-118 win.
Westbrook finished with 27 points, three rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block while shooting 9/16 from the field and 4/7 from the three-point range over the 26 minutes. NBA communication confirmed that Westbrook will be fined for making an obscene gesture on the playing court in the fourth quarter. It was announced today by Joe Dumars, Executive Vice President, Head of Basketball Operations.
The incident unfolded in the fourth quarter on Nov. 25 at Ball Arena during the Nuggets-Knicks NBA cup game. Westbrook attempted to drive to the basket, but Josh Hart (Knicks star) blocked the shot. Nuggets point guard retained the ball and sank a three-pointer from the corner. During this attempt, Westbrook directed his middle finger at the opposition’s bench. This gesture was criticised on social media and made headlines.

Meanwhile, this is not the first time Westbrook had such actions on the court. He had a history of doing controversial things. Previously, the Nuggets star was fined for profane outbursts during interviews.
Russell Westbrook signed a two-year contract worth $3.3 million with the Denver Nuggets this summer. His side is struggling with a record of 10-7 in the first 17 games. The 36-year-old had a great season with the Nuggets, averaging 12.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 1.5 steals per contest while shooting 39.1% from the field and 37.5% from the three-point range.
Despite all the drama on Friday night, Westbrook snatched the limelight with his scoring ability as he paced the Nuggets with 27 points. However, the veteran guard has to maintain the rules, as the NBA has been strict in following the guidelines that come under sportsmanship. Westbrook will now be in action to face his former side, LA Clippers in next game.
