Breaking Down the Financials of Anthony Elanga’s £55M Move to Newcastle
Nottingham Forest forward Antony Elanga secured a £55 million transfer to Newcastle United on Monday. Having a breakout season with Forest helping them to a seventh-place finish, the Swedish forward heads to St. James’ Park in July 2025.
Starting 31 games of the 36 that appeared, Elanga had 17 G/A in the Premier League 2024/25 season. For a team that spent most of the season in the top three, the 23-year-old made significant impact on their success. Moreover, being their highest goal contributor, Elanga paired up with players like Morgan Gibbs-White and Calum Hudson-Odoi for Forest’s best season in a couple of decades.

Newcastle United has agreed to pay £55 million for Elanga as agreements are in place with the player’s camp on a long-term deal. Having booked the medical tests for Elanga, the Magpies are confident of adding him to the squad during preseason.
The arrival of Erik ten Hag as manager in 2022 marked a turning point in Elanga’s Manchester United career. Ten Hag used Elanga sparingly, giving him only 417 Premier League minutes across 26 appearances, with just five starts. As a result of less time on the pitch, Elanga made a move to Nottingham in July 2023.

While we’ll buy a player for £100M and end up selling them for £5M
Nottingham Forest signed Elanga from Manchester United for a reported £15 million ($19.3 million) on a five-year deal until June 30, 2028. Having sold the winger for over £55 million, Forest has displayed remarkable scouting abilities. Making more than three times what they paid, Forest will look to invest the money coming in some more promising talents.
Once seen as a promising academy graduate who won the 2020 Jimmy Murphy award, Elanga will turn out as one of the biggest slip-ups by Manchester United. Heading to Newcastle who will compete in the Champions League 2025/26, Elanga will be back to the top-tier of football he’s used to since youth levels.
Elanga would be an excellent fit for Newcastle United under Eddie Howe, bringing blistering pace, directness, and versatility to their high-energy, transition-based attacking style. He would combine effectively with Alexander Isak, whose movement in the box would capitalise on Elanga’s crossing ability. Moreover, having Antony Gordon who has similar attributes on the other flanks, the Magpies look like a side with depth in their attacking side.
