The WNBA All-Star weekend was not short on drama, after all the players showed up in the warmup with a message to the league management. The players’ t-shirts bore the slogan of “Pay Us What You Owe Us.”

This caught not just the basketball world’s attention, but also made national headlines. A debate on pay parity has begun in the context of the WNBA. Some have argued that WNBA players deserve a pay rise for the league’s recent growth.

However, many have also suggested that a rise in pay can only take place if the WNBA becomes profitable. Looking at current figures, the WNBA is far from breaking even in terms of both revenue and spending. In fact, the NBA subsidizes the WNBA by providing them with millions every year.

Team Collier’s Kelsey Plum praised the collective message and its powerful impact on the league discussion. In a post match conference, the Indiana’s own spoke clearly during the WNBA All-star about the message behind the shirts.

She said, “It was a very powerful moment. As players, we didn’t know that that was going to happen. It was a genuine surprise. The T-shirt was determined this morning.”

Clark’s Team Targeted in Protest Fallout

Kelsey Plum also took potshots at her counterparts and singled out them oddly. She suggested that Team Clark wasn’t proactive during a meeting before the demonstration during the warm-up.

Plum said, “Not to tattletale but, zero members of Team Clark were very present for that.” Sabrina Ionescu, who sat beside Kelsey at the presser, looked taken aback by the sudden comment.
