Winnipeg Jets clinch playoff spot with a 3-2 OT win over the Capitals, moving closer to the NHL’s top seed with a thrilling game-winning goal.
The Winnipeg Jets and Washington Capitals treated hockey fans to a thrilling showdown on Tuesday night, one that could very well be a preview of this year’s Stanley Cup Final.
In the end, it was Winnipeg that came out on top, securing a hard-fought 3-2 overtime win against the league-leading Capitals. More importantly, that victory marked a historic milestone—the Jets became the first Western Conference team to officially punch their ticket to the playoffs this season, a franchise first.
It wasn’t easy, though. With just four minutes left in regulation, Washington’s Alex Ovechkin delivered a clutch game-tying goal, forcing the Jets to fight for that crucial extra point. But Winnipeg didn’t flinch.

Just 1:28 into overtime, Nikolaj Ehlers broke free on a breakaway and sealed the deal, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. Mason Appleton and Josh Morrissey also found the back of the net, while goaltender Connor Hellebuyck—who’s making a strong case for the Vezina Trophy—racked up 27 saves, securing his league-leading 41st win of the season.
With this win, the Jets now sit at 49-19-4, just one point behind Washington for the best record in the NHL. They also have an eight-point cushion over Dallas in the Central Division, though the Stars still have two games in hand.
Winnipeg has now made the playoffs in seven of the last eight seasons, but the real challenge lies ahead. The franchise hasn’t advanced beyond the second round since 2018, when they fell to the Vegas Golden Knights. But if Tuesday’s game was any indication, this Jets team looks more than ready to take flight.
Next up, Winnipeg hosts New Jersey on Friday as they continue their push for the top seed.
