NHL Faces Uncertainty as U.S.-Canada Tensions Impact Revenue

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman recently addressed concerns about how ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Canada could impact the league, particularly its finances. With seven Canadian teams contributing around 25% of the NHL’s revenue, any economic shifts—especially those affecting the Canadian dollar—could have ripple effects. Since player salaries are paid in U.S. dollars, a weaker Canadian currency would make operations more expensive for those teams.

Bettman stated that he has not yet spoken with the Trump administration but sees the tension between the U.S. and Canada as a “policy issue,” with both nations’ citizens “caught in the middle.”

“I’m hoping that this is a moment in time and both countries find a way to work through this,” Bettman said, adding that the uncertainty and tariffs may also cause difficulties with the NHL’s sponsors.

Despite these concerns, the NHL is on track to surpass $7 billion in revenue this season, with strong attendance and television ratings. The league’s financial health remains solid, with teams playing at nearly full capacity and franchise values averaging close to $1.92 billion. Bettman remains optimistic about the league’s stability, emphasizing that the NHL is in a strong position moving forward.
