NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman Addresses Future Succession Plans

After 30+ years of leadership, Bettman assures the NHL he's staying for now while succession plans begin to take shape.

Gary Bettman has guided the NHL for over thirty years after being named the league’s commissioner in 1993. The 72-year-old leader has steered the sport of hockey through several lockouts and significant transformations both nationally and internationally.

However, the NHL is aware that Bettman won’t remain the commissioner indefinitely, and they are already starting to take measures to get ready for that eventual truth. Michael Russo and Chris Johnston of The Athletic recently discussed this possibility with Bettman, discovering that it was the commissioner who raised the issue in a recent gathering with the Board of Governors.

“I raised the specter that at some point this is something the league is going to have to deal with because when you’re dealing with a CEO who has been doing this as long as I have, it’s a more complicated process, But the only discussion that was had was with three-plus decades at this job, at some point the league is going to have to deal with the reality that I can’t do this forever.” : Bettman said.

Say whatever you want about Gary Bettman but he’s always been a friend and a supporter of hockey in Ottawa.

Craig Leipold, the owner of the Minnesota Wild, is a member of the Board of Governors’ executive committee, the team responsible for finding Bettman’s successor when necessary. The vocal owner of the Wild commented on the daunting challenge that lies ahead for them.

“Listen, we’re like a $5, $6 billion company — the entire league is, So we have a CEO who’s going to be moving on and any transition would cause us to be concerned. And so, really, all I was saying is that we have had a commissioner now for 30 years, maybe a little more, and he has been outstanding. I mean, truly, truly, has been an incredible commissioner and has done great things. When you don’t have the energy and the passion you have to think about it, The good news is I have the energy and I have the passion. I love what I do, and actually I enjoy doing what I’m doing probably more than I ever would enjoy retirement.” Bettman continued

The positive update for the Board of Governors and the entire NHL is that Bettman’s departure is not approaching anytime soon. Bettman emphasized that he remains passionate about his position and has no intention of departing shortly.
