NFL Onside Kick Rules 2025 – What Are the Rules With an Onside Kick?

Eric Divakaran

The 2025 NFL season has kicked off with a bang, bringing in familiar faces in new roles and a slew of some unexpected twists that have kept fans on edge through Week 3. Offseason moves, like quarterback swaps and defensive overhauls, promised some fresh narratives, but the real story lies in how teams have adapted or struggled in these early stages of the season. From rookies trying to make a name for themselves to veterans facing some amount of pressure, the league feels wide open, with power rankings shifting dramatically after just a few games.

To our surprise, teams like Indianapolis Colts and Green Bay Packers looks like they could go all the way this season, defying any preseason skepticism with dominating wins that highlight their improved offense and defense. The 49ers despite injury concerns, are still expected to go deep into the playoffs, while teams like the Giants have been knocking on the door. It’s definitely been fun to catch up with all the football action going into Week 3, and we wonder what’s in store for us fans.

What are the NFL Onside Kicks?

An NFL onside kick is a short kickoff attempted by the kicking team to regain possession of the ball, typically as a last-ditch effort in the fourth quarter when a team is behind. The ball must travel at least 10 yards for the kicking team to legally recover it.

NFL Onside Kick Rule Changes 2025- What Are the New Onside Kick Rules for 2025?

For this 2025-26 NFL season, the main onside kick rule change allows teams to attempt an onside kick at any point in the game while trailing, rather than only in fourth quarter which was the decision the NFL made early on.

The kickoff team’s alignment for onside kicks have been adjusted to give them a better chance of recovery.

The game of football is changing each other season, with various alterations made in the game plan. So far all the changes have worked out great for the NFL and the offenses and defenses are continuing to thrive!

I cover the National Football League and things cannot get better than that. I always dreamed to play football or basketball professionally since I’m built like a Running Back. But now that I can’t, since I’m technically in the “Unc” age, I thought why not pick a career in sports industry? So here I am, doing what I love, and hoping that the Commanders win the Super Bowl. I give love to players when it’s due, but can be critical about their performances at the same time. Enough about me, now let my articles do all the talking.
