NFL Analyst Believes That the Commanders Acquiring Deebo Samuel Doesn’t Really Move the Needle

The Washington Commanders were terrific in 2024 season after hiring head coach Dan Quinn, and picking Jayden Daniels in the draft. They went from being a 4-13 team in the 2023 season to a solid 12-5 in the 2024 season. In the playoffs, the Commanders defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and knocked off the number one seeded Detroit Lions. They were eventually knocked off by the Philadelphia Eagles but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it was the furthest they had advanced in more than 3 decades in the playoffs.

The Commanders are finally becoming relevant and a team that can go deep into the playoffs. The future looks very bright for this young team and they also acquired Deebo Samuel in the 2025 offseason, which should help the Commanders as their QB now has more weapons to utilize in their offense. Even though Samuel’s production has been down for the last couple of seasons, we believe that it was mostly because of his lack of utilization in the offense during his time with the 49ers.

While this was a great trade, ESPN’s NFL Analyst, Dan Orlovsky believes that this move may not be enough for the Commanders to get over the Eagles. Let us find out more.

Dan Orlovsky says that acquiring Samuel is not enough to beat the Eagles

Dan Orlovsky gave his thought on the Deebo Samuel trade and said “I do think that Washington is fascinating though because of this, and I loved Washington last year, I wanna give them their flowers and credit them.” Orlovsky continued “I also think they cannot fall into the trap thinking they’re that close. 5 wins in the last play of the game essentially? That’s not likely in the NFL.

So while they’re encouraged and intriguing, they’re not one move, one Deebo Samuel away, from chasing down Philadelphia. There are still flaws in this roster that they gotta have a very much so like attack mindset and not resting on the success of last year mindset.

Dan Orlovksy describes Washington’s offense with one word: “Pace and Space.”

Orlovsky also described the Commanders’ offense with one word “Pace and Space,” after acquiring Deebo Samuel. He said “That’s kind of their bread and butter of who they want to be.”

Orlovsky continued “The Pace on offense, that no huddle, and then the space that creates. Sometimes because of the tempo, sometimes because of how wide their formations are, and when you combine them together, that’s why you get so many of those perimeter screens. No Quarterback in the NFL threw more perimeter screens last year than Jayden Daniels (Daniels and Caleb Williams were tied for most screen passes to perimeter with 34). So you’re talking about potentially lining them up in the backfield and giving them the ball? Absolutely.”
