What a turnaround the 2025-26 NFL season proved to be for the New England Patriots. After finishing with a 4-13 record and coming last in the AFC East, the Patriots bounced back not only with a winning season but by taking the division crown with a 14-3 record.
And to cap off a historic season, the 6-time Super Bowl Champions reached the big game once again, falling just short against the Seattle Seahawks. At the start of the season, nobody expected the Patriots to win so many games, let alone challenge for the Lombardi Trophy.
However, an offseason coaching change led to the removal of Jerod Mayo from the head coaching position to make way for former Patriot linebacker Mike Vrabel. The former Titans’ head coach completely changed the outlook and the mindset of the team as the players took to him instantly.
In any case, that is now all in the past, and it is time to look to the future. The NFL offseason is in full swing with the Combine and the NFL draft coming up in a couple of months. So, here is a look at how the Patriots are expected to fare and their areas of concern ahead of the upcoming season.
After finishing the previous season with 14 wins and 3 losses and making it to the Super Bowl, the New England Patriots are favored to win over 9 games in the upcoming 2026-27 NFL season, as per the odds via DraftKings.
The table below shows the Over/Under for the Patriots’ total wins in the upcoming regular season.
| New England Patriots 2026-27 regular season wins | |
|---|---|
| Over 9.5 | -140 |
| Under 9.5 | +115 |

Looking ahead at the Patriots’ upcoming season, there are plenty of things that need to be sorted out in the offseason. But the biggest step in keeping this franchise back on top was already taken last season upon the hiring of Mike Vrabel.
If the former Titans’ coach could get New England to the Super Bowl in his very first season in charge, just imagine what he can do for this franchise in years to come. But, without getting too far ahead of ourselves, the Patriots’ locker room has undergone a positive change that reflects a winning mentality, fighting spirit, and toughness, just some of the things that were lacking earlier.
Quarterback Drake Maye will be entering his third season in the league, and if his last season is anything to go by, we can expect further improvement in his gameplay. But one of the reasons for New England’s massive success last season was attributed to their second-easiest strength of schedule.
This year, though, that will not be the case as the Patriots have the 6th toughest strength of schedule amongst all 32 teams in the league. This will be the single most interesting factor going forward for the AFC East franchise, as their final record at the end of the regular season could either justify how far away they really are from being a consistent contender or if they have already reached that level.
As far as the Patriots’ opponents for the 2026-27 NFL season are concerned, here is a list of all the teams they will face.
Looking at the list of opponents for the Patriots, the upcoming season could be a difficult one. Within the division, the Bills should pose the toughest challenge once again, but New England could go 4-2 in the AFC East.
However, they will be up against 8 teams that made the postseason last year, and teams such as the Chiefs and Lions have the potential to come out on top of the Patriots. Moreover, the Patriots’ defense and offensive line issues will need some sorting, especially when going up against tougher opponents.
Early prediction: Patriots 2026-27 regular season record: 10-7

As far as injuries are concerned, the New England Patriots don’t have much to worry about. Outside linebacker Harold Landry III was signed by the Patriots last offseason on a 3-year deal, but he was limited in games down the stretch due to a nagging knee injury. He is, however, expected to be fully healthy prior to the start of the new season.
Defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga and linebacker Anfernee Jennings are struggling with foot and knee issues, respectively, but both are expected to make a healthy return during the summer.
The Patriots have a few positions on the roster that need to be addressed during the offseason. First and foremost, several fans and analysts are calling for an improved O-line, especially after seeing rookie left tackle Will Campbell struggling to hold his own in Super Bowl LX.
During the regular season, the Patriots’ O-line ranked top ten with the sixth-highest pressure rate (38.3%) and the seventh-highest sack rate (8.7%) in the league.
Secondly, the Patriots could use help at receiver with Stefon Diggs nearly doubling the production of Kayshon Boutte and Mack Hollins, the next best options at the position. Diggs did most of the damage as the slot, which is where he works best, but New England is missing a threat on the outside for Drake Maye to work with.
And thirdly, the Patriots’ pass rush was another disappointment during the 2025-26 NFL season. New England managed to rank just inside the top 20 in pass rush win rate. Edge rusher Harold Landry started the season strong, but his history with injuries limits his ability to play over a full season. Other linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson is set to become a free agent, further reinforcing New England’s need to bolster the position.
At present, the New England Patriots have a boatload of draft picks for the upcoming 2026 NFL draft. In fact, they currently hold as many as 11 selections across 7 rounds.
Being the runners-up at the Super Bowl, the Patriots’ first round selection will be at number 31, which means they are likely to lose out on the top 2-3 players at the position they wish to draft.
As a matter of fact, New England holds 3 picks in the first 3 rounds, and all of those selections are towards the end of each round. They are loaded in round 6, where they have 4 selections at numbers 190, 201, 208, and 211 overall. With all that draft capital, the Patriots could possibly entertain the idea of trades prior to the draft to fill positions of need.
Overall, with their strength of schedule and their draft picks coming much later in the rounds, the final draft results may not have much consequence on their overall wins for the season.
