The Houston Texans completed a trade deal with the Philadelphia Eagles that involved the reigning Super Bowl Champions getting wide receiver John Metchie III and a 2026 sixth-round pick in exchange for tight end Harrison Bryant and a 2026 fifth-round pick, as per reports.

This trade resulted in a win-win situation for both parties, especially since the Texans were in need of additional help at tight end, given that Brevin Jordan will miss the season after tearing his ACL. As for the Eagles, they continue to add weapons to the receiver room, which already boasts the likes of A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.

However, Metchie could have very easily become part of another team, as the Texans were involved in talks with the San Francisco 49ers as well.

49ers Showed Interest in the Metchie Trade

As per NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Texans were already in talks of trading John Metchie III to the San Francisco 49ers before the Eagles swooped in and landed the wideout with a better offer.

Metchie, who was drafted 44th overall in the 2022 NFL draft by the Texans, missed out on his rookie year after he was diagnosed with leukemia. Fighting off the cancer, he has since played in 29 games over the past two seasons, hauling in 40 receptions for 415 yards, including one touchdown.

49ers Receiver Room Status

The 49ers’ receiver room is currently undergoing multiple problems. Their top three wide receivers on the depth chart are Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, and second-year wideout Ricky Pearsall.

Following a contract standoff with Deebo Samuel, San Fran traded him to the Commanders earlier in the offseason. WR1 Aiyuk is still recovering from his torn ACL and MCL from last season and could potentially miss up to week 6 of the 2025 season.

Jennings had a career year last season, catching 77 passes for 975 yards and six touchdowns as he became one of the go-to guys for Brock Purdy following many injuries to other pass catchers. But he has requested more money or a trade. Things have been rather calm on that front, but then again, Jennings is not partaking in preseason due to a calf injury.

Wideout Ricky Pearsall didn’t have an ideal rookie season since he was shot just ahead of the 2024 regular season. Although he played in 11 games, his development didn’t go according to plan.

Putting everything into perspective, one can see why the 49ers could have been interested in landing Metchie. But now that that ship has sailed, the question remains as to whether San Francisco is still looking to add to its receiver room for the upcoming season.
