NFC North Showdown – Lions Struggle against Packers Defense and Fall in Season Opener

Packers win against divisional rivals Lions at Lambeau Field's 2025 NFL season opener!

The NFL is back! And one of the biggest stories of Week 1 of the league’s new season took place at Lambeau Field in Wisconsin this Sunday. In a clash of NFC North rivals, the Green Bay Packers hosted the Detroit Lions and defeated their opponents 27-13.

The game marked the debut of Micah Parsons for the Packers, having been traded from the Dallas Cowboys during the offseason. The Lions also had some new additions for 2025, as the team lost its top coordinators to other teams—Ben Johnson to the Chicago Bears and Aaron Glenn to the New York Jets.

Micah Parsons Makes Packers Debut As Green Bay’s Defense Shows Up

Green Bay’s defense was the game’s biggest factor. They had four sacks (one by Micah Parsons, his first as a Packers player) on Jared Goff, as well as an interception. On the offensive side, quarterback Jordan Love completed 16 of 22 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns.

Offensively well below their 2024 numbers, the Lions’ standout performer was tight end Sam LaPorta, with six receptions for 79 yards and no touchdowns.

With the victory, the Packers (1-0) take a lead in the division. The Packers return to action next Thursday (11), again at home, against the Washington Commanders (1-0). The Lions (0-1), in turn, have another divisional duel next Sunday, September 14, against the Chicago Bears, in Detroit.

How the Game Played Out

The Packers’ first drive and first touchdown. Jordan Love found a 15-yard pass to tight end Tucker Kraft for the Packers’ first points of the season. The home team extended its lead on the following drive, with Brandon McManus converting a 34-yard field goal. But the Lions closed the gap with Jake Bates’ 30-yard field goal, making it 10-3.

Green Bay carried the momentum, however, as Jordan Love’s pass to Jayden Reed for a 17-yard TD sent the match into the locker room 17-3.

After halftime, both defenses improved their pace, and only three points were scored in the third quarter. Bates scored another field goal for the Lions, this time from 27 yards, and made it 17-6.

In the final quarter, the Packers sealed the game with a three-yard rushing touchdown by Josh Jacobs and a 38-yard field goal by Brandon McManus. In the dying minutes, Isaac TeSlaa scored a beautiful touchdown for the Lions, the team’s first of the season, but it wasn’t enough to put Detroit back in the game. The game ended with the final score being 27 to 13 in favor of the Green Bay Packers.
