Newcastle United vs Manchester United Preview

Newcastle United comes into this fixture with the hopes of securing the fourth or fifth spot in the Premier League standings, with both spots guaranteeing automatic qualification to the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League season after positive results for English clubs in mid-week. On the other hand, the Red Devils are looking to avoid a first bottom-half finish in the Premier League history but Amorim might use this match as a breather before the second leg of the quarter-final against Lyon.

Newcastle United

After satiating their hunger for a long-awaited trophy, Newcastle are now eyeing a return to the Champions League after missing out on European competitions this season due to their struggles in the 2023-24 PL season. The Magpies have a stronghold on the fourth position given their match in hand on Chelsea and could even finish third if Nottingham Forest slip up in any of the upcoming matches.

Anthony Gordon’s absence might be the most crucial piece of news for Howe who has suggested that the forward is back in training but will be assessed closer to the match. Lewis Hall, Joe Willock, Jamaal Lascelles, and Sven Botman will miss the match due to their respective injuries.

Predicted Starting XI: Pope; Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento; Guimarares, Tonali, Joelinton, Murphy, Isak, Barnes

Manchester United

Amorim’s men are currently placed 13th in the league standings and would be eyeing a return to the Champions League by virtue of winning the Europa League. While the Red Devils scored two goals against Lyon on Thursday, they failed to bag any advantage as Andre Onana’s goalkeeping blunders continue to haunt United who might dip into the market for an elite goalkeeper yet again.

While Matthijs de Ligt, Toby Collyer, and Lisandro Martienz are sure-shot absentees, the quartet of Luke Shaw, Ayden Heaven, Amad Diallo, and Jonny Evans might feature on the bench on Sunday. Amorim hinted that skipper Fernandes would be rested for the clash against Newcastle while also laying importance on a win on Sunday.

He said, “Bruno Fernandes is playing all the time and he is playing better all the time. Sometimes this kind of player doesn’t play in every match, but we will address that. Sometimes winning games is the best way of preparing for the next one. Of course, I am going to be careful with some players but again we need to be competitive.”

Predicted Starting XI: Onana; Lindelof, Maguire, Mazraoui; Dalot, Ugarte, Casemiro, Dorgu; Mount, Zirkzee, Garnacho

Newcastle United vs Manchester United Under/Over Predictions

The Playoffs aim to facilitate the safest bets for the game. Have a look at the predictions for the game below.

Total goals Over 2.5 @ -165 (MGM Bet): Both Newcastle United and Manchester United kept clean sheets in their last match in the league but Andre Onana’s form in goal signifies that there will be lots of goals on Sunday while Joshua Zirkzee also scored in mid-week and could be a danger to the hosts if Amorim starts him ahead of Rasmus Hojlund.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United Player Picks

Alexander Isak (To Score a Goal @ +100 as per MGM Bet): The leading goalscorer for Newcastle United in the 2024-25 Premier League season, Alexander Isak has scored 20 goals in 27 league matches apart from contributing 5 assists. After scoring only 1 goal in Newcastle’s Champions League campaign last year, Isak would be itching to have another go at Europe’s elite competition and he would be on fire to ensure his team finishes in one of the Champions League spots.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United Prediction

Newcastle have the opportunity to complete a league double against the Premier League’s most successful side for the first time since the 1930-31 season, and Howe would definitely like to add this feather to his cap. If the Toon Army completes a double over Manchester United, they will be the fourth team to do so this season, the last occurrence of four teams completing a double over the Red Devils was back in the 1957-58 season.

Our Final Prediction: A 3-1 win for the hosts, given that the Red Devils played in mid-week and would have one eye on the Europa League yet again when they line up at St. James’ Park on Sunday.
