Eddie Howe sets sights on Brentford’s versatile forward Yoane Wissa

Newcastle United is considering signing Brentford striker Yoane Wissa in the latest transfer reports. After having cooled interest in Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike, Eddie Howe will switch interests as the pursuit of a dual forward system continues.

Although Newcastle United has yet to contact Brentford, it is expected to do so soon. Additionally, an agreement would also need to be reached with the DR Congo international on personal terms.

Why the Shift of Focus to Brentford’s Yoane Wissa?

Newcastle was prioritising Hugo Ekitike of Frankfurt but the interest of Liverpool might have pushed them back. Moreover, with the decision to keep Alexander Isak, the Reds have made it clear that they will pursue Ekitike.

Scoring 19 goals for Brentford in the Premier League 2024/25, Wissa is in top form to be recruited. Moreover, with the high-paced wingers the Magpies own, the 28-year-old could fit right into Howe’s system. However, having one year left in his contract with Brentford, the Bees are unlikely to sell Wissa as things stand.

Last season, the Wissa was the Premier League’s highest non-penalty goalscorer. Wissa is valued to be around £30 million on the current transfer market. Having paired up with Bryan Mbuemo, Wissa is no stranger to the two strikers’ system that Howe wants to implement.

Speculations also say that Wissa would rather reunite with Thomas Frank at Tottenham Hotspur than sign for Newcastle United this summer. However, Tottenham who are in pursuit of Nottingham striker Morgan Gibbs-White have made no solid bids for Wissa yet.

Newcastle United is exploring the possibility of acquiring Wissa as the availability and cost of Wissa may be dependent upon the future of Manchester United’s target, Mbeumo. The Magpies who also look to offload some players due to financial constraints will compete with Nottingham Forest and Arsenal as well.
