A controversial call can finish the Pistons’ season

It’s playoff time, meaning anger toward refs is at an all-time high. However, the Pistons have a legitimate gripe after Game 4. The Pistons were down one point. Tim Hardaway Jr. rose up for a potential game-winning jumper from the corner three. Josh Hart contested at the right time but made pretty substantial contact around the rib cage of THJ, which derailed his shot attempt.

He was clearly fouled by Hart. No whistle. Game over. Knicks celebrate. But Pistons were fuming after being robbed of three free throws and a chance to win the game. Unfortunately, the sequence can’t be redone.

At any rate, it was a hard-nosed defensive battle. The Knicks jumped to a 10-point lead in the first quarter. The Pistons had cut it to seven by the end of the first half. Detroit played their best basketball in the third quarter, pinching a 28-14 period.

But the Knicks’ duo of Karl-Anthony Towns and Jalen Brunson kept fighting. KAT was especially impressive and made the last field goal of the game, a three with 47 seconds left in the final quarter.

It paved for the potential game-winning shot by THJ, but a series of chaotic events under the rim meant that the physicality reached a high level. At the end of the day, the lack of a whistle will haunt the Pistons for a long time, espescially if they can’t erase the difficult 1-3 deficit.

This has been an intense series. We have seen two high-scoring games. Game 1 produced 235 points and Game 3, 234. Meanwhile, the low-scorers were Game 2 with 194 and Game 4 with the lowest score, 187. Thus, we have seen all sorts of hues in the series.

So, which way will Game 5 swing? I don’t see a high-scorer per se, but not the type of low scorer we saw in Game 4 either. I believe the total will be more likely in mid mid-200s

OG Anunoby to score over 16.5 points: The Knicks Wing has been inconsistent thus far. He has had two 10 or under performances, marked by two 20 or over performances. I see him hitting the “over” mark here with 18-22 points.

Josh Hart to grab over 9.5 rebounds: Hart had 7 rebounds in each of the first two games. Since then, he has hit the 10 and 11 mark in the last two games. I expect him to grab double-digit boards again.

Jalen Duren to clasp over 10.5 rebounds: Duren cleaned up a lot of junk in Game 4 and ended up with 17 rebounds. He has pulled down 10+ rebounds in two games thus far, and I feel Game 5 will be in similar territory.

This has been a breathtaking series. But as usual, the narrative around refs has sullied the feel of the wonderful tilts. At any rate, the Pistons are hurt from within and will be keen to take a game away from home, as a matter of pride.

However, New York can see the finish line towards the East Semis. They have lacked consistency from the role players, but they know how to get the job done regardless of that. Therefore, I see them winning this game by a sizeable margin
