New Jersey Devils Reassign Isaac Poulter, Set to Recall Nico Daws

The New Jersey Devils reassign Isaac Poulter and are expected to bring up goalie Nico Daws for upcoming games.

The New Jersey Devils assigned goaltender Isaac Poulter to AHL Utica on Thursday. This move gives the team some cap relief during their three-day break. Poulter isn’t expected to rejoin the roster for the Devils’ two-game road trip to Buffalo and Pittsburgh. Instead, they’re likely to recall more experienced goalie Nico Daws to back up Jake Allen for the trip.

Poulter was recalled just last Friday after news broke that starting goalie Jacob Markström would miss four to six weeks due to an MCL sprain. The 23-year-old Poulter backed up Allen in the last three games but hasn’t played yet in the NHL. Despite being called up multiple times, he still hasn’t made his NHL debut.

Poulter, who was originally signed by Utica as an undrafted free agent, has been in the professional hockey scene for three seasons. He has had solid numbers in the AHL and ECHL, including a 32-18-8 record in 60 appearances for Utica and a 15-8-2 record in the ECHL with Adirondack. This season, he’s had a .897 save percentage and an 8-7-4 record in 19 games with Utica.

Although Poulter has had a better season than Daws, he’ll stay in the minors for now while Daws, with more NHL experience, gets another opportunity. Daws has 46 NHL games under his belt, with a 19-22-1 record, but his numbers have been below expectations.

This season with Utica, Daws has posted a 3.40 GAA, .888 SV%, and a 5-14-2 record in 21 games. Both Daws and Poulter don’t need waivers this season, but Daws will next year. Daws is signed through next season, while Poulter is a restricted free agent and could be up for arbitration.
