NBA Summer League Day 2: Jones-Garcia Spearheads Spurs’ Win, Bronny James’ Summer League Debut and More

Closing the first weekend of the competition in 2025, the NBA Summer League brought two games this Sunday. Both duels were valid for the California Classic, one of the three official editions of the tournament. Thus, the Chase Center first hosted the clash between Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat . And then the home team Golden State Warriors , who faced the San Antonio Spurs .

Every year, the NBA Summer League brings together the best basketball talents in three different competitions. The first ones take place in California and Salt Lake City, in a four-team format. Finally, starting on July 10th, the most anticipated edition begins in Las Vegas . The main one of the three, it pits all the teams in the league against each other.

Bronny James Makes Debut in the NBA Summer League, Cole Swider Shines in Lakers’ Win

The Lakers made their debut in the 2025 NBA Summer League this Saturday (5) , suffering a defeat against the Warriors. However, Bronny James , one of the main attractions of the Angelino cast, did not enter the court. This Sunday, LeBron James ‘ eldest son not only played but also lived productive moments within the four lines, in the resounding 103-83 victory over the Heat.

In just over ten minutes of action, the youngster scored ten points, collected four rebounds and stole a ball. In addition, he made two of his five attempts from the perimeter, with a 40% success rate. Los Angeles’ standouts in the opening duel, forward Cole Swider and point guard DJ Steward once again recorded excellent performances. The former scored 20 points and shot 70%, while the latter had 14 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The negative highlight was, once again, Dalton Knecht. The sophomore was on the court for almost 22 minutes, but scored only four points, the same number of turnovers he committed. In two games, the point guard has already attempted nine shots from the perimeter, but has yet to make any.

Speaking of disappointments, Miami point guard Kasparas Jakucionis also had a disappointing afternoon. Selected at No. 20 in the draft, the Lithuanian scored just four points, missing all three of his shots and committing five turnovers. Point guard Bryson Warren finished as the top scorer, scoring 18 points on ten shots, but also committed five turnovers. Kel’el Ware , a member of the All-Rookie Second Team last season, contributed 12 points.

David Jones-Garcia Leads Spurs to Thrilling Win over Warriors

Spurs fans have been eagerly awaiting the start of the NBA Summer League so they can watch Dylan Harper’s first games in the team’s uniform. However, that expectation has been delayed, as the number 2 pick in the last Draft has not participated in any of the games played so far.

If you haven’t been able to watch Harper yet, Texans fans have been surprised by David Jones-Garcia’s great performances. The 23-year-old forward has yet to make his NBA debut, but he was San Antonio’s top scorer in both games. Against the Warriors, the undrafted second-year pro had 25 points, three rebounds, three assists, three steals and a 64% shooting percentage, despite five turnovers. Carter Bryant, the 14th overall pick in the draft, also did not take the court on Sunday.

For Golden State, the standout was LJ Cryer. The point guard, who was the NCAA runner-up for Houston in 2025, scored 19 points, hitting five of seven 3-pointers. Will Richard (who was the NCAA champion for Florida) finished with 16 points, the same mark as Isaiah Mobley, brother of Evan Mobley, of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Even without the tournament’s hottest young players, the duel between the Spurs and Warriors ended up being one of the most entertaining of the tournament. The game remained even until the end, with 21 lead changes. In the last play, Golden State had a chance to win, but point guard Jaden Shackelford’s 3-point shot hit the rim twice, off the backboard, and refused to fall. In the end, San Antonio won by 90-88.
